Where the hell are the seatbelts? Had to look this up: Vintage 1966 postcard from top of chair lift in Jackson, Wyoming. That's why no seatbelts. |

For sure those who grew up in the 70s (including yours truly) can relate to most of this. Very similar to how we spent summer break in Europe during that pre-computer era (except maybe the roller rink: was very uncommon over here - we roller skated in the neighborhood streets, knees and elbows unprotected).

We visited Banff when our son was about 7 1/2 and our daughter was about 9 months old. We thought it would be fun to take the chairlift up the mountain. Little did we know there was nothing but gravity keeping us in the chair; no bar! I'm surprised we didn't squish our kids we held them so tightly! It was a very stressful situation for us!

I remember being out at recess and trying to see how high we could swing on those big sets. We thought if we went high enough we could go right over the top and all the way around. What actually happened -- to me anyway -- was that once the swing got beyond a certain point the chains went slack and the whole works fell straight down! Quite a jolt.

to work. The anemic 1600cc engine went flat before long. A high school friend of my wife had one. Her husband recently told me it was the worst car they ever owned. I don't know if his had the early 1600cc engine or the later (and better) 2000cc engine.

There was a nightclub outside Weiden in Germany called the Tote Hose (not the best name for a night club). It was open all night. We'd spend a Saturday afternoon grilling steaks and drinking. Then crash for a few hours. Then wake up and have dinner and watch a movie. Around 11PM we'd head out to the Tote Hose and spend hours there. Ah, those were the days.

Anyone remember the school giving out these red tablets which stained your teeth? You were then supposed to brush normally and the stains would show how crappy a job you really did?
Our kids never had to go through such trauma. |
