My build started out as MY22 and rolled to MY23, I received an email from my CA today stating that ID8 is just a rumor and MY23 will in fact be ID7. his exact quote -
I just thought I would I add that from what I have seen despite the rumors the 2023 G42 M240 will not get idrive 8. Let me know if that changes anything. |

When I went in there last weekend to touch base (ie. spend more money on MP accessories), he was mind blown when he saw on the VIR that it was coming from Mexico. He was literally speechless. He kept trying to find ways to show me it was coming from Germany and he couldn't do it. Most of them don't know half of what we do lol. |

I was way late to the M240 game as I was always an audi guy, and recently happy in my boring base Macan til I found about the G42 m240. I got an allocation spot for a ‘23, and immediately got a refund once I stopped at a dealer to check out idrive 8. iD8 is great for hybrids and casual commuter cars, but it does not work for sports cars. I know the M range exists and I don’t care where that shuffles the m240… but to any standards outside of bmw forum members and YouTubers, the m240 is a sports car. And at least for me, iD 8 just kills the vibe. I would be annoyed as an M3 owner if I had to put up with iD 8 in a proper sports car. i think it’s asking a lot of people who are begging to hang onto manual transmission and RWD platforms to be fine with a swift jump to an interior that makes you feel like you’re in the future as opposed to on a track. a lot of the reason many people avoid Tesla’s is their terrible faux-rocketship interiors. My biggest problem with BMW doing this is the fact that they did this solely to play catch up (or cost savings perhaps)
When solving problems, you must identify what the shortcomings are, and then create a solution. With iD8 it is clear that BMW had their solution in mind before even considering if there were problems with iD7. Apart from being “more modern looking and on par with other brands” the new iD8 system does not solve any new problems for users. It is scalable, sure, given it is all software based, but what real new worthwhile problems can that platform solve that would make up for the garish, half baked implementation? Even the Tesla owners I know only like their massive iPad interfaces because they are tech heads that enjoy the gimmicky perks of the Tesla OS. BMW drivers, generally, want a driver centric experience. Not something that is “modern looking for the sake of it” |

BMW`s team of marketers and designers decided this was the right direction. Of course with a new design there will be those who dislike it. |

I dunno — this is the first new car I’ve had that has the exact amount of technology I have always wanted — ID7 in a ‘22 BMW 230i. I am very grateful to NOT have ID8 — I do think it looks great & slick — but coming from both a job that me in a LOT of rented cars and test driving plenty of prospects — I wanted a mix of actual knobs and buttons and slick tech. ID7 gives that to me.
Too many vehicles…granted, no, not BMW-level luxury…have started to move what I deem crucial functions of the driving experience (HVAC, set heating/cooling, inside/outside lighting, etc.) to a touch screen and multiple-level buried buttons to press on a screen. While driving, no less. No thanks. ID7, at least in my car, has the perfect mix of technology and physical buttons. Previous car was also a BMW (of sorts, a Mini Cooper S) and loved its mix of tech and buttons. CarPlay, the BMW Assistant, Alexa integration — I use all those things & won’t get another car without them (at least CarPlay). EVs too that put everything in a touch screen or touch-capacitive steering wheel buttons…feels like a trend that hopefully won’t stick around forever. Maybe I’m just old. |

Well, cancelled my order because of iDrive8
It is one brutal abomination and has no place in a sports car. Virtually no hard buttons and a toggle switch for gear selection Come on BMW, get the millennials out of your design department. The Ultimate Driving Machine is now The Ultimate iPhone |

Yeah, there's something unnatural looking with a manual gear shift and a HUGE buttonless curved screen stretching across the dash.
Maybe it will work if the modern screen can project 20 year old analog gauges? On that note it could be a great thing to have if a hack were to make available working digital copies of dashes from your favorite past cars. I could be sporting the dash from my first car - a 1974 Toyota Celica. |
