I was also wondering if Alex is still offering his services for a suitable bribe? My 335i has about 80,000 miles - dealer did a walnut blasting under warranty when the car had 48,000 miles. Made a huge difference but unfortunately I'm due again.

I am considering buying the tools pretty soon, i could charge cash to just do the work. Or if you guys are mechanically adapt and want to lend a hand or learn i would be fine with that, just bring beer lol. Seems like there could be the potential for money to be made.

How did you get them to do it under warranty? I just got a 2011 335xi m sport and purchased an extended warranty for it. Would LOVE to get this done under the warranty.

Sarnman: my car was still under BMW's original 50,000 mile warranty and I had been experiencing a consistent engine hesitation in 4-6th gear (6MT) around 3,000 RPM when accelerating hard, e.g. merging onto the highway. I suggested to the service advisor that it could be carbon build-up in the intake valves. The tech did a test drive and confirmed the hesitation issue. They removed the intake to inspect valves and found "excessive carbon present." Took photos and submitted a PUMA case, which was authorized. The SA told me it was the first walnut blasting that they had ever done at that dealership (April, 2012). It didn't completely eliminate the hesitation issue but made a big difference. Not sure if your extended warranty will cover this but it never hurts to ask. Good luck.

The build-up on the intake valves have to causing a problem for it to be done with warranty work, back on my n55 they said one of my persisting problems was do to carbon build-up and they cleaned the intakes covered under warranty. Otherwise it's going to be considered maintenance and it's going to cost you.

Got it. I'm taking mine in for service tomorrow so I'll throw it out there and see what they say. Thanks!

I have a question. I have the kit and the car torn apart to being walnut blasting. The black vacuum to port adapter has a very small connection. I have a standard shop vac which I believe is 2-1/2" or so. Did any of you adapt a standard shop vac to the black port fitting? What is the best way to adapt this?

I used a 2-1/2" to 1"(?) adapter. A kit like this gives you various options:

Update. I had a peek at my intake valves due to alternator failure (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=387276 , post #49) and they were blackened but not bad at all! I now have 82k miles on car. The oil catch can appears to work pretty well, so I will check back on them in another 25k miles or so.

Also cleaned out the oil catch can (BMS) this past spring, it was about 1/4 to 1/3 full in 16 months time.

Do you still do this? Would be pretty amazing if you keep something like this up for 2+ years lol. Mine is at 95k and I don't think it's ever been done. Don't really have the money for it now, but maybe in a few months. I'd like to swap out spark plugs and charge pipe too while its out there. I'm not super technical but will definitely help with anything I can. Let me know, I'd definitely bring you an awesome bribe and/or pay you.

Sorry, I don't get on e90post much any more. For those near Denver, I suggest looking up Denver BMW group on Facebook. Too many good, competent and honest mechanics deserve your business. One of which is Nick Yanzito, or maybe DiabloCO can do it...

Are you a part of the group in Denver? Thanks for the recommendation on Yanzito. My 335i just came out of warranty and I am happy to have his number!

Yep. The moderator/starter of that group is a member of my Lemon's team. We have an '86 e28 we race.

I am asked frequently what walnut blast kit I used. I used this one:

https://m.harborfreight.com/portable...not%20provided

The trigger is all you need to stop/start the process.
