the current 335i engine yes will be forgotten but i have to disagree on the e39 5 series, its not that good looking of a car, M version is nice but e46 wins this all the way. |

What he said. Very rare to have a classic. I can't think of one right now that is in production and would qualify. Maybe an Aston Martin DBS or a Paganini Zonda. Want to see what true classics are? Watch a show on HD called the "Cars of Ralph Lauren" and you'll see what classics really are.

It is a disposable mass produced consumer good. Like the absorbent towel, everyone raves on about it and all of them will go to the crusher 10 years later when somebody starts building a different type of car than we have been used to in the past 100 years.
An E Type will never suffer the same fate as that is a classic. |

The Z4 is a classic design, and so is the 6er. They're unique. They break the mold. They're polarizing, but they manage to be elegant. That's not always the pre=requisite but sometimes that's what it takes.

A classic in terms of all of automotive history, probably not the E92 specifically. In terms of BMW history and to BMW enthusiasts, I think so. I really think that the E92 is a design has the potential to be the Porsche 993 of 3 Series history. Although it much bigger, heavier, and more complicated than the original, it is a VERY sleek and sexy design. When the E46 came out, I don't remember it turning NEARLY as many heads and drawing as much attention as the E92 still is now in it's 3rd year of production. Of course, this is now, and a classic is determined over time. It will be interesting to see how the post-Bangle models look and how they stand the test of time. But of course, we will have a LONG time to wait to see that.
Either way, just the fact that the E92 is a 3 Series makes it a classic in my opinion. The 3 Series as a whole is already considered a classic and has made one HECK of a mark in the automotive world. I have no doubt it will be around for another 30+ years and be considered among the legendary models (like the Corvette, 911, Mustang, etc.) in automotive history if it isn't already.
