Sorry for your trouble. I gather that the last pump that failed in your car was made in December 2009. Since you are the 2nd owner, you likely do not know if the part number of the last failed pump was -881 or -943? It would be interesting to find out, since -943 has so far not been reported as failed. I can understand your frustration - good luck in your case with BMW.

If someone has a connection with the techs, could you ask WHAT exactly is failing in the HPFPs? Piston/cylinder wear? Bearings? Actuator? Swash plate? Until we know this, it'll be very difficult to get a good idea on what could be causing the problem.

2000k miles on my 2010 335 coupe .... I have had some long cranks at start up already. I cant believe im heading for failure .... I drove the car real easy for break in period and used Sunoco 93 only. I experienced fuel pump problems when I had a eclipse turbo and I finally fixed it with a stock Supra fuel pump ..... I wish there was an easy solution for the n54.

Please read the FAQ again. I just updated it (mainly no. 10)

I believe I have mentioned this several times....this HPFP is very minor for those of us who love the cars so much and so lucky that we only have to replace it once so far.

I understand for those that continuously have multiple failures, it is unacceptable and I already listed the options in number 8.

I guess what I am trying to say is we all are tired of hearing users complaining about HPFP failures; thus, I created this FAQ to provide additional information and in the hope that we won't have to see users posting the same thing over and over again.

I love my 09 335 E90 M-Sport - going to be a rare bird here in the US w/N54 - I had to replace my pump at 6k miles and my car has some electrical issues going on too. I do think ethanol has a lot to do with this (and injectors) and it's only going to get worse as they are pushing for a 15% BLEND of Ethanol.

For me if I have to Lemon so be it - I'll gladly take my money back and jump in a M3.

I also suspect the ethanol might be causing these failures. It is more corrosive than gasoline. And I don't think they use ethanol in Europe.

The failure is related to the way the fuel is delivered in the N54 engine, so it does not depend on the transmission type. It may look as if there were more frequent problems on AT cars, since there are more of them than cars with manual transmission.

To the people that say "we love our x35 blah blah blah, I'll live with it" I do not understand how you can say this? If you have a modded car, you have to remove everything to bring it in. I had a fully bolted stage 3 meth 135, pump failed, brought it back to stock to get the pump replaced. Got the pump replaced, and pretty much didnt put the mods back on. Eventually i put on a tune and meth, pump failed. The first pump started cranking at 12,xxx miles, replaced at 18k, the second pump started cranking at 22k, now it has 24k and is going to the dealer this week. This car is the reason I will NEVER buy another BMW. I can buy a KIA and have less problems. This will be my 6th dealer visit in 12 months of ownership. That is insane.

Thanks for the info.

My brand new 335i started cranking 3-4 seconds on cold starts last week with around 1.8k miles on the odometer. I am still driving the car up until now as if it is still within the "break-in" period, so the cranking was quite alarming. I grew suspect of a larger problem brewing and found this thread and learned of the issue for the first time. It's really unfortunate that I didn't do my research before buying the car.

Some specifications:
- 2010 335i E90 Sedan
- Built: Sept. 2009 (in Germany)
- Purchased: December 12, 2009 (w/ 7 miles on odo.)

I'm sure you're all tired of hearing about new people with the same problem. I just wanted to let buyers and future customers be aware that this issue still exists in the new makes. Save yourself the trouble and wait for a solution!

Seems like these cars are being built to fail.

Perhaps they either

1. Don't have a fully modded car (I don't)
2. They don't mind removing the parts or they don't care about warranty or their cars no longer have warranty and they would go fully modded.

Any reason why BMW just doesn't do an across the board recall for these? Seems like that would eliminate much of the stresses and hassles associated with a fairly common problem.

Even the New York Times is reporting on this. Here is from Jan. 21, 2010 -

BMW Some 2007-8 335i, 335xi, 535i and 535xi models with the twin-turbo 6-cylinder N54 engine may develop a fuel pump problem that results in extended cranking time when starting or the engine control system defaulting to fail-safe mode. In T.S.B. 130309 issued on Nov. 1, BMW said it would extend the fuel-pump warranty on those cars to 10 years or 120,000 miles, from four years or 50,000 miles.

MY 2007, 2008, 2009 E90, E92, E93 – 335i, 335xDrive, 335Ci, 335CixDrive, 335Cic with N54 engine

MY 2008, 2009 E82, E88 – 135is with N54 engine

SITUATION
BMW has become aware of a potential problem that could affect the durability of the High–pressure Fuel Pump (HDP) of certain MY 2007, 2008, and 2009 BMW automobiles equipped with N54 engines. We estimate that only a small percentage of vehicles will actually develop a problem. Vehicles affected may have the Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated with various low fuel pressure-related faults (e.g., 29DC, 29F1, 29F2 ) stored in the Engine Control Module (DME). Also, the affected vehicles may experience an extended engine starting time ("long crank") or reduced engine performance ("engine failsafe mode") when the High-pressure Fuel Pump malfunctions.

CORRECTION
In the event that the High-pressure Fuel Pump of an MY 2007, 2008 or 2009 3 Series vehicle (335i/xi Sedan/Coupe/Convertible), MY 2007, 2008 or 2009 5 Series vehicle (535i/xi Sedan/Sports Wagon), MY 2008 or 2009 1 Series vehicle (135is Coupe/Convertible), MY 2009 Z4 sDrive 35i, or MY 2009 X6 xDrive 35i equipped with the N54 engine exhibits the symptoms listed above, it should be replaced with the improved part (P/N 13 51 7 592 881). For HDP diagnostic and replacement instructions, refer to SI B12 55 06 and RA 13 51 017, found in BMW TIS.

IMPORTANT:

Since Monday, October 19, 2009, a Part Replacement Authorization has been required (via submission of a TC Case) for replacement of the N54 HDP Pump on E82, E88, E89, E60, E61 and E71 vehicles. For details related to the "N54 Fuel System TC Action", refer to SI B13 08 09.
