I know it's BS and it's not her fault it's the techs in the back.

I can't see how that would replicate the exact sound that a turbo thats about to die would make.
I thought the techs would know this unless it's Day 1 at the job for them.

Ok the intake might somehow be damaged, but for there to be a whine and only at certain RPM's, at certain engine noise, and have the exact frequency that a turbo winding up would seems very weird to me.

I'm going to tell them to test drive it and make sure that the sound is gone before I pick it up.
Otherwise if I go in and the sound is still there after they said they fixed it, I'm not putting gas in the loaner since it takes me 1hr to get there and 1hr to get back. (more than 60 mile round trip)

That's why they are going to have to keep it longer when the sound will still be there after.

You're right I am overreacting a bit because it's not THAT bad but I want it to be perfect especially since I got it last month.

Update.

They changed the intake tube that sucks in the air from the grill.

Whine is still there.

I left the car there, and it has now been 9 days that the car has been there.
My SA said "it's fixed".
When I asked if the whine was still there she said "no...well only the normal turbo sound", so I am guessing she considered this normal.

I sent them an email with the videos of the sounds and other owners who have had the same sound then their turbos replace.
We'll see where it goes from here.

Any suggestions?

I had the siren noise during the first year of ownership about 2-3 months after installing a tune.
It wasn't loud - just noticeable, and like you it bothered me as to whether it was a sign of impending turbo failure.

Took it to the dealer at the 1st year service inspection and I casually "mentioned" that I can hear the turbos.

They test drove my car, then a stock car off the lot to compare.....and agreed that the noise existed.
However, they replaced both turbos without even consulting me.

When I asked what was wrong with the original turbos, they said that nothing was found....they were just noisey.

Irony is that after about a week on the new turbos, they started to howl a little around 2000 rpms. It's 3 months later now and the howl is evident at low rpm/part throttle load.

In either case, there are absolutely no driveability issues. Car drove the same before and after the new turbos.

Given how many people have reported having this noise, I get the feeling that it is a fairly common experience to have a certain amount of it as the turbos start to spool.

But maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

There are people who have had this noise since a short time after taking delivery of the car and there are those who have 40K+ miles and theirs are totally silent. The people who have never had it will tell you that your turbos are about to fail. IMO don't worry about something until there's something to worry about.

I'm only worried because my 335 didn't have it and I owned that car for 16k miles, 14k which were with a tune running 14-16psi.
My 535i has no tune or anything, so I didnt get why it started.

I think I'm just going to pick it up tonight instead of going for a test drive with a tech, blah blah blah.

I had my turbos replaced 3 months ago (latest batch) and now they are making the siren noise as well when the car is cold....Its winter here so i am at map 0 and have been since i got the new turbos.....so i would not worry that much...it just seems like some turbos sounds/whine more then others...and there is nothing we can do about it...

Mine have been making the same noise since 1200ish miles, I'm just over 4500 now.

It got way worse as soon as it got cold here. It pretty much disappears when the oil temps warm.

This is not normal.
How can a car develop a sound 2k miles or 10k miles in.
A sound in never had for thousands of miles, and a sound that other 335's/535's don't have?!

I just got my car back....whine noise still there. Guess I have to live with it.

Best part is when they say "we don't hear anything abnormal" and "it sounds just like the other 535 we had next to yours".

I have the same issue as described. Very light siren whine around 1800-2500 rpm under light load only (has never done it in neutral that I can recall). Usually more apparent when the engine is cold, but is still there when warmed, although much quieter. I can hear the sound with my windows up, but I can hear it better when they're down with no traffic, and especially if I'm near something that can reflect the sound, like another car or a wall.

I started noticing the sound shortly after getting a tune about 2500 miles ago (now have a little over 7k on the clock), but I should also note that I installed a DCI at the same time.

No other noticeable problems with the car, and no performance degradation on the dyno or the boost gauge.

This is an Apr 08 build 335i with the MSD81 unit.

A slight supercharger whine I can deal with, but a 10-20hp drop...I'd skin them alive.

Yes - I have stock DV's and DCI and whine occurred under light load at low rpms.

However, I tried swapping back to the stock airbox on my first set of turbos (which were noisier) and it only dulled the sound - you could still hear the turbo whine because it was emanating from underneath the passenger side of the car (where the turbos are) and reflecting back from the curb. If you had the passenger window open, it was hard to miss.

My new turbos make a similar sound, but not to the same volume. You can't hear it with the window down....only from inside.

As I stated in my earlier post.....I noticed no degradation in performance from the whine.

When new turbos went on, the car drove exactly the same.
