Thanks for the info. The largest change that I noticed between the two logs is that the issue occurred when IAT's were about 25F higher than the other log. I really hope that's not the cause considering the temp swing for a day here can be 30-40F

Changed the oil today and drained it into a clear tub so I can see any sediment at the bottom. There was absolutely nothing at the bottom, no large particles of anything. I ran a magnet through the oil and it picked up absolutely nothing. The oil did have the same gold-ish shimmer though in the light. If a bearing or something else went I would have expected to see at least some larger pieces of debris at the bottom. I will be sending a sample off to BlackStone next week.

I also changed the boost solenoids and there is still no tapping, also didn't notice any other changes by swapping the solenoids.

The gold flakes can represent a failing bearing. The bearing still could be intact but I would suggest sometime in the future of it failing. Sorry to hear.

Oil test results came back 100% normal. They even noted that it was an excellent report for 88,000 miles.

So the engine seems to be okay, but now I need to figure out why it was targeting 17psi in one log and 19psi in another, any why it was going lean and STFT's were flatlining along with misfiring and a couple cylinder seemingly shutting down when overboosting. I'll be working with Wedge to hopefully resolve this, and hopefully starting with a more conservative tune.

Glad to hear everything is ok
Good luck with the tune.

I saw that you had wastegate rattle before
Any chance a WG issue is causing the overshoot?

I just watched your video. My car makes the same exact noise sometimes!!! I notice it at stop lights.

It goes away and comes back once and a while. It happened on my other 335i I had also.

I thought it was something to do with fuel evap? I thought I saw terry say something about this. Maybe I'm wrong. But I thought he said if you go for a drive on the highway for a few minutes it clears it up.

I'm scared now lol

Thats another thought I was having. The turbos were replaced at the dealer about 9k miles ago and thought perhaps they tightened up the actuator rods to reduce rattle. I need to verify that they are closing at a specific vacuum, forgot what the exact number was but its a pretty simple test.

Next time it makes the noise, try unplugging the solenoids and tapping on them with a screwdriver or something. If the tapping stops then one of them is probably bad. I've read that other people have this sound and live with it but it just sounds terrible I couldn't deal with it. Plus knowing that a solenoid was not working properly was making me paranoid. And they had 88k miles on them, figure I'd replace them anyways.

Read thru the entire thread.

That sound is coming from one of your boost solenoids. Though it won't cause as issue it certainly is loud and annoying.

It's easy to replace. Check ECS tuning they sell them for a good price

UPDATE: Misfiring and flatlining of fuel trims was caused by a bad coil. I replaced all of them with Delphi N55 coils and everything is good now. It also seems to be targeting a normal boost level too, albeit with some minor throttle closures.

Wow so this entire scare was caused by a bad coil?!

What a relief. Glad it worked out for you.

Loud tapping was somehow from the boost solenoid.

That and a bad boost solenoid and sketchy looking oil. Kind of the perfect storm of things going wrong (or not wrong with regards to the oil).

It's running like a top now on E40 pushing 21+ psi on stock turbos
