It's a laptop (2.5" drive) so you will need an adapter for that as well if your plan was to stick it in a desktop, since the drive is not a 40 pin connector. The USB route has just been an easier solution for me in the past. You could stick it in a laptop that supported IDE, boot off a USB stick and create the image on either a USB stick (if you have one large enough) or network share.

Does anyone have a source for the Toshiba MK8050GAC drive? I would like to buy a spare in case mine dies when it is out of warranty.

I was able to successfully image the drive this weekend. My next step is to copy a hard drive from a 2012, then load it in my car and see if it works. If it does, then I will know of an easy and free method to update the CIC maps.
btw, there is no OS on the drive. It just contains map data, gracenote, etc. The CIC will boot up and run just fine without the drive; obviously, navi won't work.

It would be interesting to see if there are any benefits in using an SSD.

Keep in mind that the drive is PATA, not SATA.
That's going to severally limit your options when it comes to upgrading.

For the price, this drive looks like the best deal:

The SAMSUNG HM160HC disk is only rated for operation down to +5C, so it may not work for those of us in colder areas. The original Toshiba is rated to -30C operational.

Any room in there for a PATA > SATA adapter? That would open up a lot of options, mainly for going to SSD.

Yes there is plenty of room, but they all require external power. So you'd have to find a power source from somewhere.

In all honestly, I doubt it would matter.

I copied the drive from a 2011 and installed it in my 2009 car. It showed up as having the 2011 premium maps and everything. It worked for about 10 minutes then the screen locked out and it wanted an stupid activation code to unlock it.

Getting my car next week so gonna rip the drive then, I am using Ubuntu Live booting from a flash drive, and want to back the image up to my USB hard drive. Newbie to linux, wondering would this work: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb/idrivehdd.img assuming sda is the BMW HDD and sdb is the USB hard drive. Or would I be better off with using HDclone?

yes that should work, but remember that they don't call it DD "destroy disk" for no reason. HDClone is a lot safer!

Hi, I gather people have used Linux to image the drive to a file then mount the image to view the files. Not sure if the image file can be altered though, ie adding poi files which is my main objective.

Hey, Have you uploaded that image anywhere? If so let me know. There is a program floating around for activation codes, not sure if it actually works.

subscribed to this. Great project. I have an 09 CIC, and am really hoping someone can hack this thing. I'm guessing with a lot of younger people now able to get these cars, it's only a matter of time. Thanks a bunch Rotary Rasp for your work so far.
