I used a passive aggressive approach to renegotiate my salary at the beginning of the year. I called in 'sick' for literally a week straight and made it clear to my manager I was unhappy.

I've been with my company for 8 years so I have some built in equity. They ended up providing me a retention bonus + 4% salary increase.

When I was the boss/owner of a small business, I had a pretty good employee ask me for a raise every 6 months. Over a period of 6 years, I gave him raise every time except two.

In the end, he found another job (which is fine), so he announced his resignation. A couple of days later he came back with his hat in his hand, explaining that there was some sort of miscommunication and he really didn't have the new job, so could he come back.

I thought about it for a spell and decided to accept his resignation anyway. Why? He priced himself out of a job, that's why.

Damn, ouch for him! That's a pretty big screwup on his part.

I've never even put in notice at a job until I have signed, confirmed offer letter that has been accepted by the other companies HR department.

I had to be as nothing else worked but you’re right, I’m normally not.
