It’s totally brain dead to link the instrument cluster display to the safety systems.
The display should be independently customizable by the user. BMW engineers, have no clue about managing software/user defined features. They make nonsensical linkages and limitations.

In North America many of the safety systems can be enabled and disabled independently and can be off in all display modes. In the EU certain systems can’t be switched off at all, or if they can, have to default to “on” for every engine start. The car and consequently the core display system is provided as a worldwide offering, so there are some limitations based on the needs of a superset of all market legislation and mandatory requirements. |

So if you like the sport display, and want to engage cruise control, you are SOL. Which is a shame. Plus, no reason for said display to not be linked to a preset. They didn’t need to be married to safety systems. Sometimes all we want is the single tachometer bar and the tachometer in the HUD, that’s all… |

There are quite a few safety system displays (speed limit sign detection, lane departure, dynamic cruise state, etc) that are mandatory in the EU now and require certain real estate on the display, the reduced displays in Sport and Track mode with more prominent car performance info remove the area for these displays. The type of display is also a visual reminder of which mode you are in, hence it is less likely to mistake which safety systems are switched off. From an Ergonomics perspective I can see their rationale of linking the displays to the safety modes, especially where there is a conflict, for example DSC reduced or off (Track Mode) is not compatible with cruise comtrol (not Track Mode), as the car could skid out of control on ice when on cruise without DSC. The EU issue with safety systems always defaulting to a known “on” state at start may also determine what can be stored in configured modes, as they seem to want any warning/safety system to be explicitly turned off by the driver. This may be why they don’t allow storing both the display and related safety system configs in the M1 & M2 buttons (although allowing remembering the last state for the safety systems for some markets). The inability to store the Track Mode display in M1 or M2 with the associated lack of display of the driver assistance systems and default to “off” at start is also very deliberate, with the “Confirm” message needing to be acknowledged each time. Overall it seems they don’t want drivers to be confused over what mode they are in by deliberately making the displays different. |

I didn't weigh into this particular thread last November, but after driving my new G87 for a month, I'm finding it amazingly sporty. Nimble, quick, powerful, glued to the road. And an awful lot of fun. |
