The average human walks 900 miles per year and drinks 22 gallons of beer which means the average human gets 41 mpg. Not bad.

Do female Praying Mantises eat their mates after copulation?
Some say yes and some say it's a myth. Very low chances but never zero. So, a male being rejected might just had a reprieve on life. Something to think about if you're on dating sites. ![]() |

The mooning gargoyle is a stone figure at Freiburg Minster in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany that's known for its defiant pose. The gargoyle is said to have been created by a stonemason who was not paid for his work on the cathedral by the city council. The gargoyle is positioned to face the city council building, and is considered an iconic symbol of defiance.

I recall reading that after completing his car in the family garage behind the house, he realized that the car was too wide to get past the house via the side driveway, which had a side door with a concrete step jutting out. The window was closing to get to Bonneville before the weather changed.
They did the only reasonable thing and took a sledge hammer to the concrete step. I love that story! No idea where I read it.

In 1676, the Danish astronomer Ole Roemer (1644–1710) became the first person to measure the speed of light.
Yes, the man (Ole Roemer) discovered that light has a finite speed, that could be calculated. He did this using mere observation and a rudimentary telescope, by today's standards. He observed that the eclipse of Jupiter's moon, Io, was either longer or shorter as the Earth was farther or nearer in its own orbit of the Sun.

Bowerbirds are renowned for their elaborate courtship behaviors, particularly the intricate “bowers” they build to attract mates. Here are some fascinating mating facts about bowerbirds:
1. Bower Construction: • Male bowerbirds build intricate structures called “bowers” using twigs, sticks, and leaves. These are not nests but ornamental displays intended to impress females. • The designs vary by species. For example, Satin Bowerbirds create avenue-shaped bowers, while Vogelkop Bowerbirds construct hut-like structures. 2. Decoration and Color Preference: • Males decorate their bowers with objects like flowers, berries, shells, and even man-made items like bottle caps or glass shards. • They are highly selective about colors. For instance, Satin Bowerbirds prefer blue objects, while others may favor yellow or red. 3. Dancing and Vocal Mimicry: • Once the bower is complete, males perform elaborate dances around it to attract females. • Many species incorporate vocal mimicry, imitating other birds, animals, or even human-made sounds like car alarms to grab attention. 4. Female Selection: • Females visit multiple bowers to assess the males. They judge the bower’s quality, decorations, and the male’s courtship performance before choosing a mate. • If a female is impressed, mating occurs near the bower. 5. Unique Evolutionary Behavior: • The complexity of the bower-building process is thought to reflect the male’s fitness. Females choose mates based on these displays, promoting sexual selection. 6. Bower Destruction by Rivals: • Males often sabotage the bowers of rivals by stealing decorations or destroying the structure, creating fierce competition. 7. Female Independence: • After mating, females build their own nests, incubate the eggs, and raise the young without assistance from the male. Bowerbirds are often considered one of nature’s most creative architects, with their behaviors offering remarkable insight into evolutionary biology and sexual selection. |
