Hey hiya all,
xBook from the 1addicts checking in to say hi. I'll be at this event, can't wait. I won't be driving the track, I will be instructing both days @ the car control clinic. And, I am expecting really full days of fun and excitement. I don't know many of you here on the E90post forums, but I sure would love to say hi when we are all at the track. Look for the AW 135, with the badass lic. plate, and come on by and say hi. And if I se any of your cars, I'll be sure to come over and introduce myself. See ya there, Jason edit: I am going to post a link to this thread over @ 1addicts too. If that isn't cool, please PM me and let me know that it's not cool.

xbook. I'll say hi one of those days. I expect a demonstration of drifting at the skid pad.
At a taco bell near LAX on Saturday night, I convinced an owner of a '68 1800 to attend the car control clinic. Have fun with that. cross pollination between the tracking forums is wonderful. I wish there was one unified tracking forum here instead of the product specific ones. |

Tire Recommendations
OK, I didn't pass tech because 3 of my 4 tires didn't have enough tread left. The Left-Front is more than fine.
Here's the deal. This is a leased car. I will have to turn it back in approx. 14 months with decent run-flats on it. I plan on doing 2 or 3 track days between now and turn in. Also, I'm looking at getting a new e92 M3 at end of lease. Do I: 1. Purchase 3 new run-flats? 2. Purchase 3 used run-flats, if possible? 3. Do a combination of 1 or 2 plus a track set-up? (This one may be tough to sell the wife) Help please! |

I will probably be at the car control clinic working. The guy running it really helped me with the auto-x/Rally so...no participating for me. Just chasing cones.
Still I may get my wife to go to the CCC.

guys if I wanted to take a rental car to this event how would I go about getting the car teched?
In NASA I would be able to show the logbook for my regular car and get a waiver under the 'substitute car' rule in the club rules. does BMWCCA have a similar provision ? EDIT: also how do run groups work? is there documentation for run group or if instruction at a prior BMWCCA event says you can sign up for a group that is sufficient? |

lets see... I've done rental mustang 2 ways. Wait, three. No, two.
None it once with NASA. Yeah, they tech you that AM. Done it once with SpeedVentures. Basically no tech. Done it once with the GGC. The event organizers were very insistant on "no tech inspections the day of." The way I solved that was communicate with a shop directly. Harold of HP Autowerks is a certified "stamp having" shop. I'd suggest seeing in you can find a creative solution. You can get teched in your town, my town, whatever. I think the LA chapter has a list of certified shops in thier area. GGC should have similar. Another option that I would investigate is... Rent from Avis at noon. Schedule with your regular BMWCCA tech instpection shop an appointment for 1pm. 1:20, head on down. Rungroups... on the app, I think they ask, what group do you want to be in and why. They should check your GGC "references". I always say, "I was in C last time and my instructor said blah blah." I try and communicate with the club knowing that the peeps receiving my emails are volunteers. |

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=(Y)&minLoad=S Decently priced extreme summer tire with moderate tread wear that will last you until your lease is up. Then find someone with 4 run-flat take-offs and mount those prior to lease return. You do not want to run mis-matched tires for the weekend. Trust me. Do not buy just 3 tires. Quote:
San Fernando Valley: Bimmers Clinic Bavarian Workshop Burbank/Glendale: Avus Autosports West L.A./Torrance/Southbay: GT International San Gabriel Valley: European Motorwerks Orange: Windigo Auto If you're picking up a rental the day before or of the event, let the organizers know now and they'll see about arranging a tech-inspection onsite. There are quite a few qualified mechanics in the volunteer staff and instructor staff that will be able to help you. As far as run-group is concerned, you pick the run group but you must show prior experience that would warrant the run group you pick, otherwise just select no preference and you will be assigned the group the organizer deem the best fit. If you've participated in BMW CCA event in the Pacific region in the past, you WILL already have an existing record the organizers can tap into to determine which run group to assign you. If you've never driven with BMW CCA Pacific before, you will likely be assigned the lowest run group the organizers are comfortable with based on your described experience, and moved up/down based on your first few run session. DO NOT PRESS to be moved up if you feel you're place in the wrong group, that is a red-flag for instructors. Show it with your driving, and if you really are in the wrong group, the tent leader or chief instructor will move you before you can say "I'm sick of being held up!" |

Any thoughts, comments, preferences for Falken 452 vs. Nitto NT555 vs. Yoko S Drive? I gotta get 4 new ones put on my stock 189 18s before this event?
Also, is there a prescribed or preferred mileage that I drive on the tires for a "break in" prior to track days or am I dreaming things up? |

Hi Chili Cheese -
These are all good questions. Please keep them coming! The category of tires you are discussing are all roughly equivalent. I would pick the cheapest tire with the best daily driving ride characteristics. Any tire that is round, not cracked and basically safe will do fine for a beginner. For us mere mortals (excluding the yellow shirts) the 335i is SO much car that it is hard to extract 100%, even on a track. We will be more the limiting factor than the tires will be. As for break-in there is a belief that the tires need to release some of their mold release grease. It usually takes about 100 miles of street driving to do that. A full tread depth tire will suffer more wear and tear on the track so the more miles you can put on them before the event the better. I hope that helps.
