Since this was bumped, I'll my experience with this testing this. I found a welded diff out of a vette, and was successful in seperating it and drilling/tapping it. It looks like a manual lathe (or mazak) can splice them apart pretty easily. Good news for anyone with access to a machine shop.

Does anyone have part numbers for axle seals or is this something wavetrac provides?

Also, for setting up backlash, is this mandatory and standard procedure for both welded and bolted setups? Would a bmw performance shop be able to do this or is it better for a specialized transmission shop to do the setup/install?

Backlash is VERY VERY important...and bolted or welded, I'm 99% sure require special shims that wouldn't be found at the usual transmission shops.

what do these shims do? i have a bit of noise when going into 1st gear quickly (a thump)...and some noise when decelarating from high RPMs (just letting off throttle)...could the shims have anything to do with this?
