That's an hell of a repair for an alleged low-speed incident within the workshop!

On the upside, it looks like they're making a thorough job of the repair, and I think you'd be able to legitimately deny you'd ever been in a collision come resale time...

OK, just back from the dealer (again!) and in principle they are willing to take my car at a decent trade in value against a heavily discounted new model to the same spec. I'll be out of pocket by about £5K, but that's not a lot for the past year of motoring given the usual first year depreciation. They have still to come back to me with the full details, and potentially they will need to register the car first to get some value from BMW UK, but it is looking vaguely positive and hopeful.

This quote above is so sensible a lot of people should read the above and think about it

Glad they are playing ball. Sounds like you and the dealer might find some middle ground on a replacement car

Nice that you're in a position to take them up on an offer like that - sounds like the best possible solution

Yep, although yet to see the detail.

Assuming I go ahead with a new order, are there any new options I should be looking at? The only thing I can think of is the 6NF option which wasn't available when I bought the last one. Otherwise it will be fully loaded with professional nav, business speaker system, 19" alloys, DCT box, PDC front and rear, Bluetooth, USB, heated seats and so on.

This is great - go down this path and turn an unfortunate bit of luck into a new car. This is only way you will get that original feeling back about your "pride and joy"...

I think this is a good outcome for you BC. If you've spent 100k with them so far and they are doing this. It shows they value your custom and recognise their mistake. The man at the top was prob wheeled in to show you that its been acknowledged as a cock up by them and has been suitably escalated in the company.

Further update: the dealer has offered me £6,250 as a cost to change into a more or less identical vehicle. This is getting there, but I had given him £5K as the target and they would need to register the vehicle first so I would end up being the second owner on the logbook.

Given that I'd expect to get something like a 9-10% discount off a new car bringing the cost to £46K and that my old car would go on the forecourt stickered at £39K, so this feels as if they are not exactly taking much pain.

I have given them my position which is more or less meeting halfway on the figure (i.e. 5.5K) and/or doing something creative with some more options which might be palatable in terms of dealer margin, but I'm interested to hear what people think.

And hopefully final update: £5,500 as cost to change to a new car of same spec (adding smartphone integration and service inclusive) with a loan car between now and the new car's arrival.

I'm OK with this: they are taking some pain and I get a shiny new car with better voice recognition (the Nuance system on the F10 I've been driving is fantastic) for the initial inconvenience and ongoing hassle. Plus I'm hopeful that the new style (313?) 19" rims won't be as prone to cracking as the ones on my old car.

Thanks for the support/help over the past couple of days.

Good result and fair play to the dealer for doing the right thing.

As you say, they don't appear to be taking too much pain really (though they still have to fix your old car). That would make me uncomfortable about them registering the car first - a move that is only for their benefit - none for you - and I'm always happier when there is some mutual self-interest.

On the plus side for you, first year's depreciation is only costing you £5,500 - which is a great number whichever way you look at it and you have the bonus of fitting any spec items which you wish you had had, in the previous car - and some items even work better as well.

If the car is not cat d / cat c after this (which if repaired privately and not be insurers - obviously it won't be..) - then there is no obligation to inform anyone it has ever been in an accident.

so get it repaired. get your compensation.. etc. but as long as it drives fine after: stop thinking about it. problem solved

Just to clarify, even if a car is repaired by insurers it doesnt get put on the Vehicle Alret Register, its only when they have decided not to repair and payout instead.
