Treat the engine and turbos right (use synthetic oil, warm it up and cool it down, use good gas) and it should last just fine. Bimmer engines are overbuilt. Case in point: My E36's M3's 3.2 liter six with cams and other mods has seen 100 track days, where it spends over 1 hour per day at full throttle between 5K and 7K RPM, and is still running perfectly (no oil leaks, nothing wrong).

I am sorry for all your worries, but if you are asking such a question about longevity of your mods I don't think you should do it. I know shiv is a great tuner but I doubt he can predict what happen 6 years down the road.

i know how strong these bimmer engines are, my dads old E36 325i had over 180K miles on it and was still running like a champ. I dont drive my car hard by any means in normal driving, usually shift at 3K rpms. i just want to make sure that the chip doesnt ruin my 335i just a few years after buying it. i mean im sure u guys see my concern...

if you plan on modding your car you might run into problems..... key word is "might"

some might have problems some might never have problems......

but yes if you treat it right it can last you a lifetime

Great Shiv! I am following this with great interest. I want one when I get my 335. How does stage 0 look? I don't want dealership getting suspicious due to warranty so stage 0 will have to surfice for me. I have one concern though, I have been down this road before, but wonder if the drivetrain will handle all the power without issue long term. Second, seems you lost the stock-like flat TQ curve. How does that affect the driving characteristics? Just curious. Keep up the good work.

i dont think the fact it lost the flat curve is a problem since it still has more everywhere compared to stock

hey shiv, i was thinking last night and wondering if there were any sort of remote control that we could use to switch between stock ECU and the 93 octane program, kind of like the M5's Power button. Such a thing would be great, because then id only switch it over to the program when needed.

Slacker257: If this new XEDE version is like the old beta version, Shiv was only seeing a couple of horsepower (<5) gain by tuning each individual car. Shiv apparently had nailed the base map perfectly.

BMWPower06: I haven't read anything else about this in a while, but they were already working on a remote control switch. I remember seeing a photo of a key fob in this forum in a post about it.

I can't wait to get my XEDE either, so I naturally read everything I can find on the topic

would you be able to use xede if you mod turbos. I would think it needs to reprogramed.

You would need an updated XEDE, to be custom tuned aswell b/c of the limited information.

If you find anyone who can/will do this, keep us informed, it would be quite a undertaking.

Not really.

Map tuning with external control modules has been done for over a decade on performance cycles (see Dynojet, Yoshimura) and other cars. It just takes the tuning box, the software, a dyno, an A/F meter, and the right experience.

Back before there was EFI we used to do the same thing with carb jets (or new carbs) and electro-mechanical ignition advancers...

Overall, looks great. A couple of minor points, which in the end probably make no difference:

1) It looks like you're running a little leaner, up to a full point at 3000rpms, on the front end of the curve now than the previous setup. Still well below your original stock run, so I don't see any problems with it. My question is: Do you now feel that balancing A/F is factoring heavier into the equasion? aka Do you think you're getting closer to the limits of the stock system with upgraded exhaust?

2) The graph appears to imply that you're now making the same or possibly less power in the 1400-2000rpm range than stock. This very well could be a product of where your rpms were at the start of your runs and I'm not arguing that it's slower or less powerful. I'm curious to know if there is now a noticable power jump when accelerating through the range from low rpms into the mid range where you're now making the most power? Specifically, is the increase in power more of a dramatic jump now instead of a gradual increase?

Thats what i tried to say. If the turbochargers are replaced, some extensive tuning will have to be done. Not only with extracting max power, but for reliability aswell.

Is there lag? Absolutely. There is very near the same lag that the car has stock, at least with my beta Xede setup. In an ironic twist, the lag is actually a bit more noticeable because of the stark difference in thrust when the boost kicks in since there is so much more power than stock.

Yep, it's not really as bad as an EVO or STI. Those engines have less displacement creating an even larger gap when then turbo finally spins up while the 335 still had some grunt before the turbos come on. At first I was worried about this when I had the Xede installed, but now it's kind of neat to feel a power spike
