In China the acronym BMW is jokingly referred to as "don't come near me" translated. Bimmer drivers over there definitely have a reputation, cops even hesitate to pull them over.

They have cops in China? They enforce road rules? That's an oxymoron if ever I heard one.

Never saw a single one in 3 years living in Shanghai, but lots of armed soldiers etc at various places.

Pretty sure 'China' and 'road rules' is already enough of an oxymoron.

No BMWs in Shanghai? No way. The 3 and 5 series is MANUFACTURED in Shanghai for the Chinese Domestic Market. They are a dime a dozen, probably more common than Camrys which are the same price as a 3er.

another hate...

Those a$$hole drivers that think speed is an average... i.e. driving aggressively through the city at 80km/h (in a 40-50km/h zone) darting all over the place, then on the highway drives at 80-90km/hr (in a 100km/h zone) when there's no one around them. FARK ME... driving 20 kms over in one zone and 20kms under in another DOES NOT EVEN OUT~!!!!!!!!!!

V CV 335 (black E93 335i)

Please don't in future race off at the lights up the left then pull in front (that's OK), straddle the 2 lanes for 500m, weaving meanwhile while you light a cigarette which you then ash out of the car on a 36 deg day, travelling at 40-45km/h in a 60km/h zone and failing to indicate left appropriately.

I meant Cops not BMW's.

I was living there 10 years ago when a Camry cost like $100K due to taxes etc.

A 1er is twice the price of a 3er in China. It's even more expensive than a 5er

I still recall my very first driving lesson with my aunt. I'd clicked my seatbelt on and she turned to me and her first instruction about driving was the following advice:

"ALL other drivers on the road are idiots."

It was the most simple and yet profound advice about driving. I've never forgotten this and just assume that every other driver on the road is an idiot. I don't tailgate for the same reason. I make no assumptions about how capable other drivers are except that they are likely to f$#@ up at any moment. As a result, I've never been involved in an accident/prang or suffered any damage to any of my vehicles barring a nail through a tyre. Obviously there has been some luck here, but I've also narrowly avoided several accidents caused by other drivers purely by "expecting" them to f#$% up.

So by my aunt's logic - and now mine - all BMW drivers (barring myself), and drivers of any other make of car, are idiots.

lol, humurous article.

Hanging an arm out the window isn't an option for those of us who have to self-shift.

It's quite different now though. I'd say SH is now a fully developed first world city. Real estate is up to about RMB30,000/sqm ($4,500) with incomes to match. Infact I know a few Chinese who migrated to the UK years ago who now want to return to China so they can get paid more! BMWs are all over the place. Infact there are few low cost cars in Shanghai at all now there is a RMB40,000 number plate charge for SH, it doesn't make sense to get a cheap car.
