That's not lag... it's boost threshold.

This isn't even worth it. It's just begging for debate. For those of you who haven't studied statistics, or data evaluation, when something is very very small, it is accepted as non existant. Nothing is ever impossible or absolute. Did you know a woman can get pregnant in a pool if there was a man who released sperm in it prior to her entry? Trust me, the possiblitiy exists. But it is SOOOOO small that it is taken as impossible. Just like winning the freaking lottery =S Still, the lag that BMW has on the new 335i is so small, ESPECIALLY compared to any turbocharged car built previously, that they rightfully claim that it VIRTUALLY has no lag.

This particular example probably only works in the 6MT.

Drive in 3rd gear around 20-25 mph. Floor it. The car responds with a little naturally aspirated thrust (i.e. what it would do without the turbos). Wait about 1.25 seconds with the pedal down and you will feel the surge of torque as the turbos spin up. In case you were wondering, that's turbo lag. That's the longest lag I could find anywhere in the range, even 5th and 6th spool up faster, probably because there's more load to apply.

3rd gear is especially long in BMWs (it's the driving-around-the-city gear), so the car drags more here than it does in other gears. I think this is clever engineering, since even under hard acceleration, you're beginning to lay off by 3rd gear as you pass 70+ mph after the 2-3 redline shift, and you completely miss this laggy rev range.
Ok I will defend you on this, I see the exact same thing, I am not sure it is exactly 1.25 secs. I have 6MT too and if my speed is below 35 in 3rd gear, and I get on the gas the car goes okay I would say and all of sudden you can feel the boost kick in it and accelerates much faster.

Your right it does only happen in 3rd I do not see it any other time and at any other speed. However, it does not do it all the time. I have seen it when I was coasting along and my speed has dropped, then I get on the gas. It is like the turbos had time to completely spin down and I got on it and they were not ready yet.

Turbo Lag

The CFM's on my 737 have turbine lag too. Just a function of trying to get all that mass rotating!

If I recall correctly, they (Shiv?) did see a slight decrease in power after the update but it was very small, like 5hp.

well, biggest turbo lag ive seen is a VL turbo, the thing, up until 4,500rpms goes week, and once it hits boost at about 5,500rpms, the thing goes off, in first, it can lose stability, nailing that thing in 3rd fron 20km/h, is slower then a damn 1980's civiv, until 6000rpms
