I believe at least one v3 owner GPS-verified his top speed at 187mph a few months back. Pretty outlandish! And not advised

I've hit 170 before and there was still room to spare. It was still accelerating pretty good considering the speed. Maybe I'll try again after winter ha. But like someone else said the car really does handle very good at high speeds and is very quiet too. I use to have a g35 before this and topped that out I forget it was around 150 or 155, but it didn't handle nearly as good and had a ton more road noise.

Yep... the 335 is amazingly stable at those speeds. Not that I would know of course

An auto will be faster than a manual.
Didn't someone already go 183 with an auto procede?

I thought it's been done.

The 335 is truly an amazing car. 10 years ago 180+ mph cars were rare exotics.

I'm cruising up to 175 quite often (still save speed) but didn't go faster till now because of traffic. will go next summer to try out again. In march I have to drive 600 miles on german Autobahn

In a 335 bmw cabrio with procede v3, sports suspensions and stage 1 i achieved a total speed of 304Km at 6500 rpm in the dataloging. With 6th gear in 6000rpm i had exactly 280km and from there and up, only the rpm keeps rising while the km in the gauge stays at 280. At 6500rpm i steped off the gas pedal because the velocity was scary. I wonder if this thing revs up until 7000rpm???

155 is surprisingly quite stable, another 20mph won't be that scary.

Mr. 5, why would an automatic be faster? I haven't reviewed all of the gear ratios, but I was under the impression the rear end in an auto was a 3.46 ratio while the manual had a 3.0x ratio (can't remember the number). I'd think the auto would hit redline at a lower speed unless its overdrive ratio is very different than the manual.

Drag limitation aside, it can hit around 189-190.... at least on the dyno. I'd never attempt that on the street.

obviously you never drive fast.. 5 mph is huge above 155.. so 175-180 is a whole new ball game from 155 which you have obviously never fellt.. i went through a tunnel in hawaii at 125..it felt like 180 in a car because of how the walls were smearing all over the place and it looked so pretty i forgot on the liki liki there is a strong left bend i had to break to 60 in less than 150 feet.. it was scary for sure and i have hit 187 in a merc s63...now that was stable.. yet scary as hell and i loved every second of it...in the 335 never went above 170 or so.. i never saw it go above 160 on the speedo obviously but i deffinitely hit 170..probably a lil higher with my dinan tune..car felt extremely stable..i had no issues..but the difference between 155 and 170 is HUGE!!!!!! and all was on 93 oct except in hawaii with my 1995 540i that was modded up with everything dinan had to offer.

I hit 170+ in my e46 M3 with 4.10 gears.
155 was fine but it started to shimmy a little after.

Yeah 180mph plus is definitely not only possible but has been documented.
Check out the quoted text from the Edmunds review on the Alpina B3 (335 with some mods)

"Reaching the Max
The autobahn is starting to curve away into a gentle descent. Lifting might be a good idea, but taking advantage of the helping hand given by the slight gradient is probably a better one. It should be enough.

The speedo needle is soon sweeping (yes, sweeping) through the 170 mph mark and heading for the last lick of paint on the dial at 190. At an indicated 180 mph, we start thinking about the brakes; at 185 mph we're fighting the instinct to lift off.

We're not even sure the needle's moving now, but just before we get hard on the anchors, we flick a glance down at the dash: 189 mph. Probably a true 184 mph, the Alpina people tells us later. Worth the wait after all, then. And the 2007 BMW Alpina B3 BiTurbo is 29 mph faster than an M3 V8."

304kph. Nice. That's 188.48mph. I was able to hit 179mph (gear limited) in my 300ZXTT with 330whp. My 335i puts down in the 330whp range on 91 oct so I should at least be able to hit 179mph. On 100oct, it puts down 369whp so I would think the high 180mph range would be possible. One thing we have to remember is that every mph increase requires an exponential increase in horsepower. Looking at this article below and substituting the 335i drag coefficient and frontal area, we can estimate the hp requirements for the 335i to hit 200mph. This is crank hp.

335i
Cd = .30
frontal area = 23.357 sq ft

Required Power = (8.702 x 10**(-6) x.30 x 23.357 x 200**3

Required Power = 0.000008702 x .30 x 23.357 x 8,000,000

Required Power = 487hp to go 200mph in a 335i

If you calculate this for 186mph (300kph), you get 392hp.

This, or course is theoretical. If you think about it, e60 M5's generally have a hard time getting to 200mph, and they put down about 420-430whp. Given the small frontal area of the 335i, you would probably need close to those numbers to reach 200mph. I think SFValley has a chance. I say you give it a shot on the 405 freeway!!!

Calculations taken from

http://www.bobnorwood.com/300%20mph%...nd%20Power.htm

300 mph: The Aerodynamics of Drag and Power

Aviation people distinguish air resistance as parasitic and induced drag, but the critical thing to understand is that drag increases as the square of speed. That is, while power increases in a linear fashion, drag increases exponentially with speed, in a parabolic function. For example (neglecting the effect of rolling resistance), if 100 horsepower would push a certain vehicle 100 miles per hour through the air, doubling the speed to 200 would require two-squared or 400 horsepower to overcome air resistance, while 300 miles per hour would require 900 horsepower.

Components of the following formulae which can be used to compute power required to achieve a certain speed in a vehicle:

Power = 8.702 x 10**(-6) x Cd x A x V**3

where Cd = coefficient of drag (look it up for your vehicle)

A = square feet of frontal area of the vehicle

V = Velocity, in miles per hour

The 8.702 x 10**(-6) section of the equation is a slightly-fudged correction factor made up by me to account for air density, gravity, rolling resistance, etc. Bell uses 6.7 x 10**(-6) x Cd x A x mph**3 and adjusts for actual rolling resistance, where

Rolling Power = 4.0 x 10**(-5) x weight x mph

Cd is adjusted to include rolling resistance (a relatively flat function), and air density is assumed to be standard Temp. and pressure at sea level. Intuitively, power required to achieve a certain speed is dependent on how good a shape the vehicle has (coefficient of drag), how big the shape is (frontal area), and how dense the air is.

Working through an example, Bill Gordon’s Norwood Autocraft 8.2L 288-GTO 308 conversion, assuming a Cd of .33, a frontal area of 20.5 square feet, and assuming a target speed is 200 mph. Therefore,

Required Power = (8.702 x 10**(-6) x.33 x 20.5 x 200**3

Required Power = 0.000008702 x .33 x 20.5 x 8,000,000

Required Power = 472
