Dude it's simple and for the most part you can use existing DIY for replacing steering wheel and clock spring. Remember to disconnect battery first and wait 15minutes or so. The only thing you need to be really careful with is when you move the wires from the 6 pin connector to the new 12pin connector that goes into the clock spring. Make sure wire 1-6 is moved to 1-6.

I did this retrofit and don't regret it at all. But costwise it isn't worth it for most people. If you hate the cold and maybe have poor blood circulation in your hands then do it. I also used the power from a aux (charger) socket connector that wasn't in use on my car. You should find it behind the glove box on pre lci cars without smoker package.

Part tip, also order these :
1 x 61136931929 Universal Pin Terminal Uncoded
3 x 61130006664 Pin Contact With Wire Lead 0.75mm²
4 x 61130006663 Bushing Contact With Wire Lead 0.75mm²
1 x 61131378113 Socket Housing for Circular Contact
2 x 61130007452 Circular Contact With Wire Lead 1.0mm²

61131378113 wasn't a perfect match, I had to trim one angled corner on the male aux connector with a sharp knife.

Can an X5 steering wheel be used? Or does it have to be of an E90?

x5 steering wheel will require different clock ring, with 3 wires instead of four because it have heat button on a wheel

So I'm attempting this in the next few days. I have all the parts metioned by pptending. I have also read this link below as well, showing a retrofit on an E70:

Now as far as I can tell, the old wires in the 6 pin connector (pins 1 thru 6) go into the new 12 pin connector (pins 1 thru 6). Then:

-- pin 9 of 12 pin connector goes to a 10A 12V hot connection
-- pin 7 of 12 pin connector goes to ground
-- pin 10 of 12 pin connector 10 goes to pin 3 of steering column switch
-- pin 12 of 12 pin connector 12 goes to pin 1 of steering column switch
-- pin 2 of steering column switch goes to ground

Then that's it - reassemble and you're good? No need to code anything since you did not change the steering angle sensor. Only the coil/clock spring was changed. Is this correct?

I've got the heated wheel and new clock spring installed, along with new connector/hybridized harness. I have not powered up the heat for the wheel yet. All functions still work for the steering wheel controls and no errors when everything reinstalled. Hardest things were getting the airbag out and getting the column shroud snapped back together.

Need to hook up the heated wheel power now, tapping into the fuse box.

Everything is correct, there is no coding for this mod. Just make sure you use a 12V connection that shut off when car goes to sleep. Cable gauge for power and ground must be 18AWG / 0.75mm2 or thicker. (Pin 7 and 9)

If you didn't remove switch cluster and steering angle sensor reports error then turn wheel completely left and right and it will stop nagging you.

Thanks! I actually finished the wiring about 8 days ago and I'm enjoying my stock looking heated wheel. It's awesome on cold mornings. I found an empty fuse slot to tap into (switched with ignition of course). I just fished around in the fuse box with my tap and a multimeter until I found one that turned off with the key. I used a fish tape to pull wires under the dash over to the fuse box. Not hugely happy with my ground wire, which is going to the chassis via a good sized trim screw under/next to the glove box. I used 16 gauge wires. It's funny though, the connector wires are so tiny that I worried about having that much power go through, but from what I researched it's OK for very short distances.

One tricky thing is the switch connector (4 pins) uses only 3 pins, and isn't labeled, so I assumed pin 4 was the one not used and inferred the pin numbering from that, turned out correct.

Great! I used the flashlight (aux) power behind the glove box, my car doesn't have one so it was available to tap. Early pre facelift have this cable but not those produced after 2007/03 as far as I can tell.

Interesting. My build date is August 2007 so I had the flash light (which I thought was non functioning/burned out convenience light till I read the manual!). Mine does have smokers package as well.

Now that I've done it once, I could whip out the whole process in 2 or 3 hours, including making the harness. To those thinking about this, get plenty of the BMW crimping connector pins - I used all 12 I bought just getting 4 of them correct, they are small and hard to work with.

Stupid trick of the day: putting the airbag back onto the wheel only to realize I forgot the steering wheel bolt. Duh.

Wow my new christmas/winter present... Now I can submit to the price of a sports wheel upgrade. I'll probably need luck locating that clock spring but that is the joy of locating retrofit parts.

Keep in mind, The sports steering wheel requires a different shaped air bag module, (which is well over $300 or so I think). Of course you could sell your old air bag module. That's why I didn't go sport. Definitely a better wheel.

Thanks to all the awesome info in this thread, I was able to do this retrofit! It was far easier than I imagined - way less work than the electronic performance steering wheel retrofit I did in the past.

Thankfully I obtained an entire steering column (from the airbag down to the steering shaft) out of a wrecked E90, so most pins and wires were already set up in the LSZ connector. All I had to do other than re-pin from my stock 6-pin connector was to extend 3 wires (pin 2 of column switch, pins 7 and 9 of LSZ 12-pin connector). And bam! Just in time for winter

I need to do this in my car. Ex has the X5 with heated steering wheel. My hands freeze without it even with gloves. Suggestions for outfitting '11 328?

Hello everyone. Sorry for reviving a bit of an old thread, but this is the only I found online for E90.
My car is 2011 328i (LCI) and here in Calgary it gets really cold. I already bought a non-sport wheel with the heating module.
So I was thinking I just need to put in the airbag from original wheel, but now reading this thread; it seems that a clockspring for heated wheels is required (part# 61319169765) is this correct?
There is no way to keep existing clockspring and figure out the wiring?

Also, if anyone knows somebody here in Calgary that would do it, it would be much appreciated.
