Reading through the thread, I got an impression that some earlier e90 production have issues with registering the battery using this software and/or INPA? I believe my car was built in May 2007, not sure if that matters.
I will give this a try to find out for myself. Thanks for the reply! Quote:

It's vehicle older than 03/2007 that are denying any requests for battery registration, even from the factory tools. We're thinking these may not require the registration.

Hi Guys.
My local indy told me that if you are replacing your battery with aftermarket but all the attributes of new battery (amperage) is same as OEM battery, you do not need to do anything. Just change the battery and that is it. Is that correct? If yes, then why do we need to register the battery. I guess registering the new battery is must if amperage is different.

Battery registration is definitely a must if you are replacing with different type of battery (AGM, etc) or different amperage.
I'm fairly certain that registration of the battery, even if replaced by same exact type & amperage, is recommended. The BMW 'semi' intelligent battery charging system takes many variables into account when sending charging current to the battery; such as Condition of battery, Temperature, Load, etc. If your original battery was weak & on it's last legs - the charging program was/is much different than what will be needed with a new fresh/strong battery - hence your new battery will be charged under the old charging program which may lead to troubles. Gone are the good ole days when the alternator just sent out max amperage it could output @ a given RPM and regulate it thru a Voltage Regulator - now that system is replaced with a 'smart' system that uses computer algorithms. Any time you replace a proven mechanical/electrical way of doing things with a computer controlled system - you're in to much more complication & higher costs. Registration sort of 'resets' the charging program and introduces the new battery characteristics to the car so that it will charge correctly. Some say they have replaced batteries & not registered and all was fine - others start having all sorts of electrical gremlins begin to happen, & end up registering the battery to fix the problems. So it's kind of a crap shoot I guess - you may get lucky, you may not... Battery registration is not such a big deal, especially since there are at least (3) avenues to follow - either free INPA with appropriate cable, or the BavTech Tool, or using free software at this link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=727091 Yes, you will have to lay out some $$ for any (personally I have all 3), but it's still less than what the dealer wants to register just 1X, & if you go the INPA route with coding cable, there are a ton of other little cool things you can code/program the car to do

What is INPA? If I get the appropriate cable, can I use the software mentioned in the link?

E90 / E90 Battery Replacement and Procedures
Time for a Battery replacements I have an E90 07 328XI built 12/2006. I'm planning on using an Autozone 94G-DLG.. it is rated at 84AH. In reading the post, looks like the car needs to be re-coded and battery registered. A couple of questions:
1) Since battery re-coding is in increments of 10s... 70, 80 and 90... What value should I use for a 84AH battery... 80 or 90? 2) What are the exact steps required for specific the coding 3) what are the exact steps required to register the new battery 4) When coding and registering, is the car on or off? 5) I'm planning on getting the Cable & SW off Ebay. Is this what I need http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Diagno...:X:AAQ:GB:1123 or can you suggest something else since it doesn't have CAN support. TKs Frank |

Okay, so my battery died today and I had the car jump by AAA, unfortunately I was then introduce to this whole mindF*#(&$ experience that our car gives us when dealing with installing a new battery...
I ended up going to pepboys and picking up this battery & and them install it; I thought I'd try to register the battery myself. http://www.pepboys.com/product/detai...ive_batteries/ however I can't seem to find out what value i'm suppose to change the KLASSE_BATTERIE in the CAS module to.... any tips?

Thank you! I checked my CAS and currently the battery is at 90aH... according to pepboys it should be 80aH. I'll go ahead and code that in right now. Anything else I need to keep in mind?

fyi,
my ebay cable/software does not include MSD80.prg, MSV70 or MSV80.prg with method 2. so I instead used smooth1's software in this forum to register a similar speced. battery for 2008 328i. |

My '07 320i (E90) has a DME model MV1746, and the associated EDIABAS\Ecu file is MEV17N46.PRG.

Thanks for this thread!
Just when I got my '08 335i, I started having electrical problems and eventually replaced the battery as part of the whole resolution. Finally got my cable, found a good working source for INPA, started under Win7 but eventually switched to a dedicated laptop with WinXP and followed the outline of steps presented here to determine that my new OEM BMW battery matched the original charge rate of 90Ah so I only had to register the new battery via Tool32 (post #2). My first "coding" experience if you will (though really I just ran a batch script). Now to install GT1/DIS to get a diagnostic system in place... |

Hi,
I recently changed the battery myself on my 2007 335xi but now I have some concerns because it looks like the new battery isn't fully charging. Basically, it's been measuring about 12.1-12.2 with my voltmeter since the last two weeks when I did the change. And I charged the battery with an external charger overnight (the day of the replacement) and I've been driving the car a lot. My orginal battery was 90Ah and the new one is 80Ah. I'm pretty sure I did everything correctly (code new battery capacity, register new battery). Here are some screenshots from INPA. Does anybody know what all these numbers mean and how come some of them are zero? http://66.212.224.123/20130916_pminfo1.png http://66.212.224.123/20130916_pminfo2.png PM field 1 ---------- What is "chargerange hours xx - yy" ? PM field 2 ---------- What is "% actual charge status" and "% charge status 1 day ago" and why isn't is close to 100% What is "% actual start capacity" and "% start capacity 1/2/3/4/5 day ago"? Although I googled SOC (State-Of-Charge), I'm not sure what "Ah Q SOC" or "SOC-fit" mean. I also googled SOH (State-of-Health) and I would expect it to be close to 100, so I wonder why it is at 0. |
