This is basically a secondary cat delete right? What would be the difference between this and going to a muffler shop and having them make me these pipes?

secondary is a lot easier to remove then header, you could DIY or just pay to swap back for very little money. it does not require cutting or welding.
I'm getting some mixed information here. Will these afe race pipes require welding or no welding with the stock exhaust?
I read from an earlier post that this needs welding if you don't have a PE

Performance-wise it won't differ much from a secondary cat delete removal at a local muffler shop. But since it's mandrel-bent, tig-welded and stainless steel, it's made well with no terrible welds or cuts. That alone affects the sound of the exhaust but not much difference in performance. The little things matter when you're trying to achieve the perfect sound. Just ask Route 16.

So is this has to be welded if you have a stock midpipe, correct?

No. The old mid pipe will have to be cut. But you can actually use an exhaust clamp. Probably better to aviod rust. One end bolts straight up to the exhaust header and the other end can be welded or clamped.

Guys, you're all just getting yourself confused. Get the pipes and the exhaust shop will know what to do with them. Anything you do with these pipes is reversible. If you don't know what size clamps or know how to weld, bring it to a muffler shop guy who has some creativity in his craft. Research, it's all in this forum. Went I looked for my clamps, I didn't like BMW prices and looked at what specs I needed and found these Audi clamps work just as well, less than half of BMW prices.

Midpipe prices will go up when they see supply and demand. Don't wait, just buy it. These things have resale value anyway.

Stock pipes and made the 2ndary cat hollow (took out the filling).
I don't know what size are the afe midpipes. If they are 55mm, it is the same size as stock. If it isn't, just weld it.

Oh... So did you run piping through them? If not that seems like a good source of turbidity for the flow since it would just expand into the shell and then back out.

But the aFe is 2.5in which I believe is the same diameter, but the tips look tapered so maybe they just slide in and clamp down.

No piping, just left it as is. Wouldn't a resonator or muffler make it's own disturbance of air flow? I haven't noticed any negative effect, throttle response is better, mpg, sound. Exhaust air is all going the same direction. It's not making it's own typhoon kind of effect inside the cat.

Also got mine installed this past week and all I can say is...wow! It sounds amazing! Im going to post a vid and pics soon. The muffler shop needs to admit my quads since they were moved a few inches off center.

Set up sounds right to all my past exhaust set ups. Add a cone intake if you haven't already.

I can't compare the two, but I love my AA tune. great throttle response, more high end pull. If I knew at the time that evolve tunes N52, I would've went that route maybe.

On topic, I would like to hear these pipes and their catted headers with the BMW PE.
