Update on my progress........

History........misfiring, 7 new coils, 7 new injectors, 4 new plugs, 2 new oxygen sensors, several software updates, then out of warranty and still misfiring. Letter to BMW UK, first no joy, then some persistence, countless emails, countless phonecalls, numerous visits to dealership, we're talking dog with a bone........and today returned my 320i M-Sport Convertible, and drove off in a 325i M-Sport Convertible. Same mileage, better specification, new tyres and pads, 12 month warranty, and I had to cough up £1,000.

Great deal to get from the troublesome 4 cylinder and into the much nicer, smoother and hopefully trouble free 6 cylinder motor.

The problem lies with BMW as a manufacturer (or supplier of parts as aferall the issues are with Bosch and Siemens parts I believe), however fair do's to Williams Liverpool and their Head Office firstly for buying into these issues and seeing me through to a resolution, and secondly for putting up with me!

I would give the last dealer he used a call and they will confirm what has been done, this is vital if there are any future problems because its alot easier to claim if the work has already been done by the BMW Warranty system.

Have you enquired about BMW's extended warranty which isn't a great cost compared to what you would have to pay out if it went wrong.

Yea but it might be alot of hassle to get BMW to fix problem's when it's out of warranty. Plus i don't want a car that i know will have problem's as i need it to be reliable. I wouldn't really want to pay extended warranty... Iam problem best of getting something which doesn't have any major engine problems.

should i buy or not?

Hi..
came accross this post when trying to look for e92 320i owner manual..
Just put a deposit 500quid for E92 320i M sport sept 2010 few days ago..then saw this forum..
To summarize from all previous post:
There are so much issue going on with regards to fuel injector, coil and plugs..

Should I expect the same issue with sept 2010 version of e92 320i?
Really need advice a.s.a.p here whether should I buy or not as next week is the dateline to seal the purchase!!

Doc 9802........

You need to know what engine is in the car. The problems arent wholly with the 3 series, instead with the 4 cylinder engine. The name of the engine in the cars, such as mine now disposed of, is the N43 engine, and it's that which is problematic. I know, from a technician friend at BMW that the N43 either has or is about to be replaced.

My suggestion to you would be to call the dealership and find out what engine is in the car. If it's not N43, instead is a new model engine, then easy decision, go ahead with the purchase. If it is the N43 though then you're taking one big risk going for the 320. Instead maybe see if you cab afford to opt up for the 325 transferring your deposit to the 6 cylinder motor instead. Hope I've help you.

I believe that the 320D does have its problems. Turbos blowing, mostly.

Having had a 320i and now a 320D, I think I am qualified to say the 320d is 100% better. BMW replaced my 2007 320i with the 320D after 2 years of irritating problems - see earlier in this thread. The 320D is faster, smoother, quieter and far more economical [44 vs 29mpg!!!], I have heard of people with problems, but nothing like the horrendous 320i. I don't know whether a 2010 320i is any better, but I certainly would not risk it.

The D also holds its value better from new, unfortunately that's not so good when buying used.

My only criticism is why is the 320D so much more expensive than the 320i when new. The price difference between the two engine varients is a lot less in the 1 series desipite identical engines.

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I would post my update as its now been a few weeks since all my injectors, coils and plugs were done. The car is still working normally, had no more missfiring. I am now doing about 14 miles to work, no motorways at all and I am getting 41 mpg average on my screen. I am using super unleaded.

Doesn't this mean that when 320i owners want to sell no one will want to buy their car's as most will be aware of this....
I've seen a few 320i's on piston head's which have been their for a long time.

you are both right AND wrong.

1. most people discover this forum right after they order their car (ironic isnt it?)
2. the looks on this car (E92) are so good that most buyers dont even dare ask about if the engine behind the BMW badge has problems
3. you might be lucky to find a good mechanic (outside bmw) who will fix all your problems and drive this car for as long as you live

So i presume that the value of the 320i bmw car's will fall dramatically due to he problem's the engine has...If i could get a 320i cheap i wouldn't mind would have some spare cash to pay for the repair's.

To be honest no, it's over 40 page's long would take ages. I would read it top to bottom if i had a intention of buying a 320i. I presumed if the coils/injectors and plugs were changed the car run's fine ...

I echo that. Since my injectors, coils and plugs were done, its like a completely differenrt car. Performance, smoothness and fuel consumption is way better then it has ever been

Hi matt that's good to hear- I had cyl 4 coil spark and noc done recently and it's like the car I bought in terms of performance and delivery but consumption isn't back up to old figures like yours -I'm still 10% off at 36-37 around town. Much better than 24-25!!!
