When you set up a USB stick under Windows Media Player to sync, it creates a folder structure which creates a folder called MUSIC in the root and then adds folder for the artist and then a folder within that for the album.

Some os my albums are compilations etc so I actually discovered all my missing albums within the folder called:

VARIOUS ARTISTS

Obvious really.

But what blew me away?

My Windows Media 9 Lossless files sound fantastic. Now I am sure I read somewhere that the maximum supported bit rate was 256kbps but my system is quite happy playing lossless WM files with bit rates in excess of 1000kbps and they sound awsome compared to the 192kbps files.

So now I am a very very happy bunny
Thanks Networkguy! That really is great news. I had read the 256kbps limitation as well, although in the other thread, people have been using 320 without any issues. Amazing that it supports such high bitrates.

You can probably save space by just compressing to 256 or 320 --> you should not be able to tell the difference between them and the 900. It would be interesting if you did a blinded test on the same song and could actually tell which one was which.

For some reason (which I have never found the answer to), in Media Player you have the option to convert all files to a lower bit rate where the maximum is 192kbps or leave them alone. I have never worked out how to set a custom bit rate (say 300k).

But in any event, with a 16GB USB key, space is not really at a premium.

i got a quick question. so i also got that ipod adaptor too. When the engines not on, but the idrive/stereos on, my ipod works perfectly with the playlist, albums, etc on the navagation screen. BUT when i start the car (while the ipod is still connected) the playlist and albums all disappear from the navigation screen and i cant seem to get it back? :sad0147:

Update: Car Serviced This Week

Dealer updated the software (haven't had the FM/IPOD switching condition since - will monitor).
IPOD now disconnects (although the IPOD screen says both: 'connected to a device' and 'ok to disconnect').
IPOD still does not charge and it does not shut off. Near total battery drain in 4 to 5 hours.

Note: I mentioned the new 'Y' cable to the service tech, but they didn't give me a new one. If that is the final piece of this puzzle, back to the dealer I will go.

Unfortunately, will have to leave this unresolved for the next 10 days. I have to fly to London today for some very important personal business with Led Zeppelin and 19,998 other people on Monday night.

:
Yes YES YES: you need the new smaller Y cable

No NO NO: most dealers do not know this *and* BMW documentation incorrectly tells them the new cable is functionally identical to the old cable

Mine doesn't charge either, but seems to shut down? How do I determine if it does shit down or not?

I hope it works for you, it didn't work for me.

Like I said, this did nothing for me.

I've tested with the following iPods:
- 4th gen Photo 30GB: plays, does not charge despite icon showing "charging"
- 5th gen Video 30GB: plays, does not charge despite icon showing "charging"
- last gen Classic 80GB: plays, does not charge, icon does not show "charging"
- 1st gen Nano 4GB: plays only one channel, charges (plays both channels if you use a small audio patch cable from the Nano's audio out to the car's aux audio in)

Now, if my music collection would fit on the 4GB Nano, I'd stay with that - but unfortunately it doesn't. I'm meeting the BMW regional tech on Monday morning, we'll see where it takes us...

2008 535 iPod/USB Questions

On 11/30/2007 I ordered a 535 with iPod/USB option. Does anyone know if it will work with either the new iTouch or the newest Classic 80gb model?

itouch not compatible.. for the moment!

Hi!

I have an Ipod touch but impossible to connect to the idrive. The USB option stay grey...

I think it come from the fact that new itouch and iphone have not the EXTERN USB DRIVE fonctionnality...

I heard that this function will be in the next firmware 1.1.3...

Can someone with ipod touch confirm to me that it doesnt working too???

See ya

Are you using the Y-cable? That is the preferred method and does NOT require the Extern USB Drive capability.

I know many people have had different experiences, here is my own.

When I received my June build 335i, I had a 5th gen 30gb iPod and the old y-cable. It worked fine. When I got my iPod classic, it no longer disconnected and the iPod battery would run down. After updating my iPod classic firmware via iTunes, I still had the problem. After getting the newer y-cable, I no longer have the problem.

To my knowledge, my car's progman level has never been updated. I never had the FM-switching problem. I use my iPod in the car almost daily and leave it overnight every night in my car.

I suspect that the combination of the updated iPod firmware and the newer y-cable solved my problem. The only thing I know for sure is I used to have the problem and now I do not.

could you post the part number of your new cable? That would be great.

Thx,

Gloster,

You are absolutely correct .. the 2 changes together fixed the issue. Same for my May build E93 335i with iDrive.

I don't have the part number, but here are pictures of the old cable and the new cable. The box on the new cable is more rounded and is smaller. These are pictures from another forum member.

This is the last one I received - Part # 61 12 0 440 796

It may be superceeded by a new number, but it should show the new Part # at the dealer when they try and order it.

Just an FYI, I had our parts guy verify the number and these cables are currently on backorder. So if the dealer doesn't have this cable in stock, it may take a while before they receive it.

Hope this helps,

Yes. I have March production 2007 E92 and the cable does charge my iPhone. It did not with the old cable though.

Update

Today I got the new cable (Part Nr. 61 12 0 440 812) from BMW (on the small junction box the following number is engraved: 0 440 796). Now the Ipod Classic is charging and I have not yet experienced the disconnect problem.

Summary: with the current software for iDrive & the software version 1.0.3 for the Ipod Classic & the new cable, the Ipod Classic should run flawlessly.

Cheers,
Chris

So to summarize (I have tried to keep up with this thread to the best of my ability)...I have random switching from ipod to FM only when starting the car. Does the software update alone fix this?

I was also noticing that the system will switch from random play mode on its own. Will the update take care of this too?

Do I also understand correctly that the software update will help reduce the amount of lost signals with Sirius?

Thanks in advance!
