I just went to a dealership and got the bleed done. They said that if it comes back, I should go back and see what happens. According to Laurel BMW at Westmont, IL, they said that they have never replaced the cylinder head before. They said that they did like 5-6 bleeds, and they all fixed the problem permanently...why do I doubt that? I have a 2008 3.0si Z4

Facing the engine from front, the fuel injector noise is a ticking-buzz sound on the right. The TAP as I call it will be on the left side facing the engine from front. I had video on a camcorder with the VIN number right on the strut tower, timed and dated. BMW said that was not enough, it had to be heard by the dealer or a BMW rep. Since my noise would go away after driving any distance it was imposable to bring it in while making the noise. And also no way of "making it do it", this is where the games begin.
Just fess-up to the problem and fix these cars without putting customers through this BS. And stop putting these inferior parts in NEW cars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WTF

I got my CPO'd 06 330i at 40kmi. Heard ticking first time at 41kmi; got the first bleed. I'm at 43.5kmi now and heard ticking again so getting second bleed. Do I have to wait for the third time ticking before getting PUMA initiated or can it be done after second time?

Also, has anyone heard of the unpublished 11 09 10 SIB that discusses the cylinder head replacement after the second bleed from 11 09 07 SIB? Thought I saw it on another forum (but if on this one I apologize).

I sat with my SA, and asked him to hear me out. I explained in great painful detail everything I had read on here, and just how much I knew about what the real issue here was. After me rambling for 10-15 minutes, he looked at me and said there is a bleeding process they can do, to eliminate the ticking issue. (Geesh, all of a sudden he knows about the issue?)

That allowed me to again ramble about what I knew about the bleeding process, and how that was generally a temporary stop gap, until the noise comes back again ... However I understand "process", so I allowed them to "bleed" the car today while it was in.

After all was said and done, and they were shocked that I knew so much, he agreed without any fight to open a PUMA case for me on the issue ... He said he will get back to me and let me know the status, as soon as he knows more.

So all in all, I got as far as getting them to open a PUMA case ... Now I have no idea what will happen. I'm sure that my car is either ticking again now, or will tomorrow, at which point I will call him immediately to make him aware ... and to rub it in a little, I will also email him an MP3 of it (not that it will help, but so he knows I'm serious if he didnt understand that already)

Now the waiting game.

What might happen next? Anyone hazard a guess ?
I was at the dealer yesterday to have my RunFlats replaced (on them) and asked for an update on my PUMA case ... I have been complaining for 6 months, and finally got the "bleed" 2 weeks ago. OF course, it was back in 1 day .... I sent a recording from my BlackBerry to them that day.

Status as of yesterday is: PUMA case is approved, parts are on order from Germany ... Should be getting it in for a complete Cylinder Head replacement in approx 2 weeks.

Complain, Complain, Complain (Nicely) ... worked perfect for me. However I was truly embarressed at the sounds my car was making, so it was legit of course.

Thanks for all the advise here.

Quick update: BMW Autohaus (St. Louis, MO) decided to replace the cylinder head without even going through the second bleed process. Excellent customer service in my opinion. Will give an update when I get it back.

I'm sure it's SOP where BMWNA instructs the dealerships to perform the bleed procedure x times before submitting PUMA. You could imagine BMWNA getting pissed off if a dealership was doing 10 head replacements a month.

I'm sure the average person just "goes away" after a number of bleeds ... Just what BMWNA want.

Pissed Off? Sorry but BMW should be recalling all of these, and as a customer service replacing ALL these defective parts. Including taking back all the new cars sitting in lots and fixing them before the customer has to go through this BS. What a joke for a premium car company doing this to its loyal customers. And as I stated earlier the bleed does NOT FIX ANYTHING!

+1

In my case (08 328xi E92) They did the bleed once, it got noticbly worse, they immediately opened a PUMA case, it got approved, and awaiting parts and scheduled appointment now. (should be in the next 1-2 weeks)

I sent my SA an email recording from my BlackBerry, and he happened to be at a BMW training course with many other SA's , they all took a listen, and agreed it was the Cylinder Head. Maybe just lucky timing on my part. Who knows.

BMW a Noise trap?

I don't know why they are selling such $$$ expensive $$$ cars that cannot be quiet. . . I am convinced BMW believes 3 series owners enjoy riding in cars with ticking engines audible to the person stopped next to you at a light ...

A disgruntled customer relays his experience to 20 x more people than a happy customer. BMW USA / NA are you even OUT THERE???? The TSB should now mandate a cylinder head replacement ... no PUMA case...the bleed hasn't worked for anyone and is merely a waste of customer's time.

Oh yes, 45 pages in length...and is BMW doing anything proactive? Maybe they give better service to x6 owners ... oh wait, they don't sell 1/100th as many x 6 vehicles as 3 series...oh wait...they want 3 series owners to go to Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes ...

The silence on this issue from BMW speaks volumes

It is a total shame, they do not care. I told them how unhappy I was in the way I was treated in this matter, OH WELL. I also told them I would be telling my story to anyone who wanted to listen, OH WELL. I told the dealer BMW created this problem and brought it upon themselves, OH WELL. I also told them they do not need to loose ONE sale, OH WELL. Don't get me wrong I liked the car but after the way i was treated by BMW I would never by another or recommend one to anyone.

Hello, Does anybody have experience dealing with the engine ticking noise at BMW of North Scottsdale. I am taking the car in tomorrow, and am expecting them to say this is normal and they have never heard of this issue before. Thanks.

Well we all know that BMW is really saying "Those wussy Americans always want their automatics, so we give them their automatics and now they start complaining about valve tap which is a result of having their automatics. PFFT. They should've bought 6 spds."

OR

"HA HA...Americans buy our cars which were designed to be driven on the autobahan and all the do is 'put' 'put' 'put' around town in their automatics, and now they whine about valve tap which is a function of having big engine, going 'put' 'put' 'put' around town using an automatic...HA HA HA HA"

OR as Mike Miller hypthozied on time ago

BMW Marketing "Americans demand big 6 cyl engines"
BMW Engineer "Sir, the typical American BMW owner lives in a urban area, and requires an automatic so our 6 cyl will develop valve tap due to low rpm driving. We need install a redesigned head with a check valve"
BMW Accountant "Nein...too expensive"

FWIW..I'm happy with my head replacmement. No more tap.

+1. I have a 6MT and had my cylinder head replaced.

There was no fuss whatsoever from the dealership. They did the bleeding procedure, ticking was back shortly and I took the car in. They opened a PUMA case, had the car for about 10 days, replaced the cylinder head, did an oil change and returned my car.

It certainly helps when you have a good knowledge of the issue rather than just complain.
