@M_Six
you just gave me a bloody flashback... mounting my POE camera over the garage door, crawling in the eaves, I stood up a little too far and the top of my skull met with a roofing nail. Man, headwounds bleed profusely!

I retired with about 4 months lead time. Toward the end everyone asked me what I was going to do. My last day was going to be a Friday. My answer was sleep late on Monday and play soccer on Tuesday afternoon as was the norm than whatever the f I wanted to do after that.

Been there, done that. And yes, your scalp will bleed like crazy.

I do, too. I do cuss at the frustration of putting things together or working on things, but mostly I cuss at the incompetence that is the norm in the world today rather than the exception and I cuss at stupid, incompetent drivers. I also mostly cuss when I’m alone, but I slip occasionally. I have no doubt my friends would be shocked if they knew how much I cuss these days!!

A 5 minute job took more than a half hour.
I went out to replace a front yard camera a week ago, that had failed last summer and was taken down by roofing contractors last fall. The RJ-45 connector on the existing cable was all corroded, so it took 30 minutes and two hot tea retreats inside because of the cold to scrape it clean with a dental pick. Once the camera was working, I reached up with my screw gun to land the first of three mounting screws into the existing holes from the previous camera's mount. That screw went scooting off into the snow, as did the second screw that I tried to land. Keep in mind that this was all done while standing flat-footed on the ground, not on a ladder or anything. TL;dr - I shouted a few expletives in Italian at it (despite not being Italian or speaking the language), draped it over the porch light by its ethernet cable, and have been recording a video of our front step ever since.

To make me feel even more old and useless, my DW changed out our worn-out front door hinges in 10 minutes...including having to drill out a stripped screw.....

First off, Happy Birthday!

Retiring is a huge change in a person's life. Luckily, my brother-in-law retired well before I did and I was able to see first hand how NOT to do retirement. He was an attorney and his job defined him. So, after he retired, he always felt incomplete or not worthy because he no longer had value in his eyes. He was literally miserable. All we heard were old stories about some trial or legal case from the past. He drove my sister nuts. They had money and health but instead of embracing his retirement years as a chance to travel, try new things, sleep in, etc, he just got up early like he always did and complained about everything.

After watching this first hand, I made a commitment to myself to not be that guy and try to really enjoy retirement. I hike, snow ski, take lots of trips, play guitar, go to lunch friends, and spend lots of time with grand kids. Not once since I retired 10 years ago have I been bored or felt unworthy because I no longer worked.

When I first retired, my wife and I would take a one week vacation and rush back home because that's the way we always had done it. I thought, why are we rushing back? Let's take another week next time. Now our vacations are up to 5 and 6 weeks long. We are simply not in a rush.

Sorry to bore you with my story, but I'm sharing for a reason. Congratulations on your retirement. Enjoy each and every day. You've earned it.

Thak you for the perspective. My wife and I plan to do a bit of traveling over the next few years. She stays busy crafting and sewing and I'm going to build another car. I'm hoping to do a Factory Five Racing Daytona Coupe to go along with my Cobra. Then there is always a project to do with the house. My wife already has a long list of projects lined up for me. It'll be nice to be able to mow when I want rather than stuffing all those yard work chores into the weekends.
