I can't make my own topic yet, but here's some backstory in case anyone was curious:

A few months ago, I took my car in for a recall and I was informed by my dealer that I had an oil leak. They said I needed to replace the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. They wanted to charge me a ridiculous amount to get it done. I had a private shop do the work for me and that was that - or so I thought.

This past weekend, there were 5-6 drips of oil on my garage floor. This was the first time I had ever seen oil drops under my car. I took it in this morning (not to the dealer) and they told me that there was quite a bit of oil that had been caught by the undercarriage cover. Now the thing is: I'm not sure whether there is actually still a leak or not. They couldn't tell me where the drops may have come from, or if there is even actually a leak - they could only recommend a motor shop.

I'm still contemplating whether I should take it in for another look. I don't know whether there is an actual leak or if some residual oil that was on the undercarriage cover from the previous leak got wet and dripped on my garage floor. I checked my car at lunch, and alas, there were two drips underneath my car. The shop that I went to this morning said they were going to spray some brake cleaner around to clean off some of the oil. So, now, I don't know whether it's more oil leaking or if it was just brake cleaner that eventually dripped down the bolts..

Oh, and they forgot to put the undercarriage cover back on. They were cleaning it, put it aside to dry, and forgot about it. I'm going back to get it on this evening.

Well, the OFHG and valve cover gasket are two of the usual suspects for oil leaks but you haven't mentioned the third member of the gang, the oil pan gasket. You need to do a thorough inspection of the block to see if any of the oil is coming from the valve cover. Odds are it is not since that was replaced recently, but possible a poor job was done. If the oil is only on the lower part of the engine, on the pan and sprayed around near it, then it is probably the pan gasket.

All engines will leak oil at some point in their service lives - gaskets fail. BMWs are somewhat known for it, just a cost of ownership. The oil pan gasket on an x-Drive E90 is kind of a big job - mine was $1100 at an indie shop.

Bought a replacement for my wagon, then drove it the 3.5 hours home with jumper cables under the hood to bypass the failed engine ground.

Monaco, yep! I do like the color.
It was keyed in a couple of spots unfortunately, but I've never been one to worry too much about a perfect exterior. All the panels are original, and it is a 102k mile one-owner car, so I'm hoping it'll last me a bunch of years.

I wish dealers didn't throw away all repair records. From what I can tell, this one was well maintained until recently, and the failing ground strap pushed the previous owner over the ledge for replacement. I'll still probably baseline all the fluids.

Sunroof doesn't open. Hopefully I don't have to drop the headlining and replace the whole module, but I can pull the one from my '07 if I have to.

If it's the motor it's an easy diy. As far as crevice records u can hav bmw dealer pull the records of what was done to it at the stealership

M3 control arms install.

Took about 3 hrs.

Hardest part was getting the smaller arm to fit into the subframe. Had to hammer the shit out of the subframe to widen it out.

Turned the tie rods out 3 full rotations on each side (to make them longer). Alignment seems intact after doing this. Driving to alignment place right now.

First impressions, surprisingly not much difference in handling. That could be because I have an m3 steering rack installed (with 325i tie rod ends).

Lots of increased road noise though. Didn’t realize how quiet stock ones were.

More on this as I drive more.

It’s apartment parking/monthly parking in jersey city. Hard to get a non valet spot in nyc. So it’s pretty much a 40min commute to my “garage”.

Not supposed to be doing work here tho

Need to strategically pick dates/times when I’m least likely to be caught!

you probably still have an oil pan leak.
they all do.

ignore it. they don't leak enough to bother with the repair.

the OFHG will leave oil right on the front of the engine, easy to see. It will drip down just above the vanos valves.

the valve cover will leak on the exhaust, so unless you smell burning oil, not likely it's leaking.

Surprising about the NVH. People been on about not much increase for a decade, plus the M3 ones are still hydro right? I’ll tell you how mine goes with monoballs.

2012 e91 xdrive. Dash/iDrive started throwing Left Tail Light Malfunction warnings. ISTA debug showed fault "A8B6 - Brake light, left, faulty". All the lights in the back worked fine.

Went to Wal-Mart, spent $5 on two Sylvania 7506 lights, replaced both bulbs in the back left. Dash error went away.

Frustrating (since all the lights worked) but glad the error is sorted at least.

I had that happen on my 2009 E90. There must've been an issue with the bulb internally causing the error light. I replaced the one that was throwing the code and the code went away.

I have just been driving mine and putting off the water pump, t stat install. It has a code but the light keeps turning itself off. All the parts are already sitting in my shop but I have to move the e9 off the lift and thats kind of a pain. Oh well, I guess thats a good problem to have.

have you installed your arm with the wheel carrier lifted? aka same position if the car was on the floor.
If not it could be hard for the bushing, they will be twisted hard.

Yeah I don’t mind increasing the feeing of raw inputs - ie m3 steering rack with limited steering, m3 front sway + bushings etc

But the increase in noise is definately noticeable, especially in nyc/jersey where the roads are shit. No difference in regular nice smooth driving roads though.

Definately. Loaded the rotor with a jack prior to tightening down subframe bolts.

What’s strange is that the driver side front sits about 1/4-1/2 of an inch higher than passenger side. Many debates on this, but seems to be the design of the car/bmws in general.

My old 328i had a part that held the trunk floor panel up when accessing the storage compartment underneath. My 330i didn't, so I ordered one, and installed it today.

I don't know if someone had removed the one in my 330i, or someone had installed it in my old 328i, but it's something that SHOULD be a stock item, if it isn't. Small thing, but very useful!
