the car is a DREAM to drive. i just bought a 2007 335i and ten days later it went into 'limp' mode and i took it in to get serviced to see what was up. at this time i new nothing about the commonality of HPFP failure and the service guy immediately told me that it was probably that. however, after a test, they ended up replacing the injector. the service guy said he tried to get the HPFP replaced, but BMW wouldn't authorize it because it didn't show up in the test. having said that, i was pretty pissed to be back at the dealer after day 10, but you know what? i LOVE driving this car and if BMW is going to fix it for free...the f**k it!

Thanks for the post, skeptic. I am interested, since I am running a MY 2009 N54, so far on its first HPFP. After reading your post, I've checked the usual suspects: RealOEM list as current -881; Tischer lists -943.

A prspective on the HPFP problem:
From BMW SIB 13 03 09, Fuel Systems January 2010: "We estimate that only a small percentage of vehicles will actually develop a problem." Christoph Rauwald, DOW JONES NEWSWIRES, quotes BMW AG (BMW.XE): "Vehicle sales in 2009 fell 10.4% on the year to 1.29 million cars, but BMW retained the crown as the world's best-selling premium car maker ahead of Daimler AG's (DAI) Mercedes-Benz brand and Volkswagen AG's (VOW.XE) Audi AG (NSU.XE) unit." The SIB dealing with the HPFP is much less specific than the BMW financial report, likely because the reliability of the pump is of not enough concern to the company. |

BMW can keep "estimating" all they want. I don't know why they estimate when they have the actual number. I believe the number when an independent third party is finally allowed to verify it. So, when are the 2010s going to get the extended warranty...? |

On the other hand, at 34K, you should call the Guinness Book of World Records and submit a entry for the longest life of a 335i HPFP. Just kidding. Hope you get another 34K out that replacement. Me, I'm just playing Russian Roulette every time I drive wondering when the bullet is going to strike my 335.

The pump is available from Tischer. I believe, their price was given as being around $385. If you want to be sure, go to their web site, or search the forum, since the part number and price was given recently on the forum by someone from Tischer. Bear in mind that so far it is not clear whether the new pump will fix the problem, and for how long. The part number of the OEM pumps has been changed before, and the problem is still with us.

I think my third pump failed this morning. Last night on the way home from work, had a very strong smell of fuel in the cabin (even with windows open). Wife was behind me for part of the drive and said she could smell it as well. This happened when my first pump failed as well.
This morning, had a very long crank, and when she turned over, she was stumbling and bumbling all over the place. The pump in there now (third one) is the new model number. So assuming it failed again (which dealership hasn't confirmed, but symptoms appear to support) the new pump isn't the answer. Getting pretty tired of dealing with this. It's affecting my job and life big time, and this isn't the economy to be the guy constantly having to get in late or leave early to figure out my car's service. Worse, I spent $50,000 so that I woulnd't ever have to worry about this sh!t anymore. I'm going to have to seriously consider calling this thing a lemon. Problem is, there aren't any other cars i want to drive, and the damn 2010s are having the same damned issues. |

^ You could have bought a Kia for the $12K range, and had it be reliable... Price doesnt make it reliable LOL
My $20K Acura was the best car I've owned, 70K miles, never saw a dealer ONCE. (at it was pushing near 400WHP). |

3500 miles - my 2010 335i HPFP just went :-(
OK, FYI, my brand new 2010 335i coupe just died with classic HPFP symptoms (i.e., long start times, then when running, malfunction engine - reduced power light comes on, engine stops and I had to coast off to the side of the road). Repeat process four times until I have BMW trailer it back to service center where it's been now for two days :-(

here's what they stated: car starts normally at this time. read fault memory. no faults stored. checked fuel pressure drop of low pressures fuek ciircuit as per SIB 13 08 09. low pressure fuel system pressure is 6 bar when running pump and drops to 4.6 bar after 10min performed high and low pressure fuel system test as per SIb 13 07 09. system passes all test as per N54 fuel system diag tree. high pressure fuel pump should be replaced. and thats what they did.
