Don't bother with the sunroof thing. Get into the glove box, buy a fuse tap ("add-a-circuit"), plug it into something that's switched on with the ignition, ground it to the big allen bolt next to the fuse block, run the wire up the felt liner next to the A-pillar, and you're done. Easy and clean.

OK, so I read all the threads on this mod. Tried the finger method to unclip the clips. I did not like this as it was very tight and was distending the headliner...so I stopped. Inserted a thin putty knife in front of each light and was able to unclip the clips. This was tense at first, but after consulting the DIY threads and pictures, I went at it again. The key is knowing where the clips are located so you have the confidence to pry up in there. Whew! Now, after reading all the different methods, piggy back vs green/white wire splice vs fuse tap, I decided upon trying the vampire clip provided by Valentine in the hard wire kit. Found the green/white wire. Exposed it from the black wrapping and clipped the blue vampire splice. Attached the power wire here and attached the ground clip to the 10mm hex bolt as pictured.
It works perfectly. No moon roof issues. Re-assembled and all is good. I chose not to do the fuse tap because I do not like mounting my V1 low and running wires all over the place. I like it up high by the mirror. its clean and it works. If you are carefull and do a bit of homework ie. be familiar with all the pictures...what I described above works to perfection. Good luck.

are some people who are using the green/white wire having issues with the sunroof... and some are not?

Ok just tried this and it works as described below.
Couple things worth pointing out; - don't be afraid to get your fingers in there to pry open the light panel as the method described by OP. - loosening up the 10mm for grounding was a pain, because it was in the corner and hard to get my rachet in their and the ground wire. It is a small space for my hands. - I stripped the green/white wire for better contact - make sure to tape the 'vampire clip' because it has a tendency to move around and loose contact. So far sunroof and all is working perfectly. Well that was one day of testing. Love the flush look. Quote:

FYI, There's a big brown ground wire that's in another cluster that you can piggy back off of just like the green/white power one, no need to connect it to the bolt.
The Invisicord I had with my GT-R worked in the M3 without a problem and it already comes split into two leads: Also, I'd recommend using a plain butter knife to unlatch dome unit instead of using your fingers to depress the clips from the windshield. The DIY instructions at the start of this thread are perfect. I was a little worried about bending the headliner to get to the clips at first, but not worries - it popped right back into place.
I could not get one of the electrical connectors disconnected from the console, so my wife held it out of the way while I worked. The grounding lug was also a pain to get to as I had to bend the headliner away from my ratchet handle so I could work. I also had to tape the grounding wire to roof while I tightened the lug back down because it kept getting pushed out as the 10mm bolt turned. The one final difficulty I had was getting the piggy back wire to stay in good contact. I had soldered the strands ahead of time, but the 16g wire, though the same size as the wires in the V1 kit, were too big for the hole in the connect with the green/white wire. I filed down the tip of the piggyback wire to a flat spade shape and it slipped right it to the slot and now everything works perfectly. Thanks for the DIY write-up! |

Phew. Nice install method.
So I have to admit I read the DIY and did the install without reading the complete thread. It's summer so I didn't even try the roof until reading this a day later.
Good news, no roof issues. I made my own invisicord as I had one from the infiniti g35 I had previously. The little pin connectors work nicely. I admit I would likely have opted for a fuse tap if I read about the roof problems, but they seem attributed to bad grounds. No problems for my bel vector 995. Thanks for the DIY post! |

I got the concealed display and ran the cord along the top of the windshield and tucked it in with a dull plastic spatula. I used the seam at the corner of the windshield where the top of the airbag cover is and got the cord to the door. I pulled the weatherstripping and ran the wire down the door until I got to the access opening.
I tapped into the cigarette lighter and put my concealed display in the ashtray. When I get out of the car I just close the ashtray. |

i did this and it keeps throwing up SOS call malfunction and keeps calling bmw assist back to back what should i do??

I used this method and found it was much easier if you removed both visor clips (left and right side) closest to the sunroof controls. There is a flap you flip open and use a hex nut to loosen out the screw then pull the actual clip down. From there it isn't such a tight fit to reach from the front and push the metal tabs down.

Blendmount has a mount now for BMW mirrors. Pricey but awesome. Got mine the other day, and my V1 just came back from Valentine last night (I'd sent it in for an update as it's over a decade old.) Can't say enough about how awesome the Blendmount is; I got out of the habit of using the V1 just because suction cup mounts SUCK ASS and it's distracting trying to stick your RD to the windshield while driving - your accessories shouldn't make you *less* safe.
I decided to go with the fuse tap rather than going into the roof, got the phone cord run down to behind the glovebox last night, wow, that was a PITA, took way longer than it should have. It's snowing now so installing the hardwire adapter and fuse tap will have to wait |

I always dread popping the clips I always struggle and my fingers are too big or I either mar the fabric with a dirty screwdriver or just plain struggle. However I'm so excited I found a super super easy way to access.
What I did was first pop the map light covers off. (They just pull straight out you might need to pop the frosted plastic piece off). You can then see the silver of the clips through the openings. I then took a strong thin nail that I could bend with a pair of pliers I bent about a quarter of an inch of the nail. Which was small enough to fish behind the metal clips through each map light then lightly pulling back well...bada-boom-bada-bing it unlatched the clips and its super crazy simple Last edited by crashoverride; 01-02-2013 at 08:50 PM.. |
