Actually its the same thermostat 11517805811 with 88 degrees stamped. It probably depends on the cooling system, 325d has both EGR and main stat.

Do you have the partnumber for the EGR thermostat?

Can it easily be disabled - if you're running with a "disabled" EGR?

EGR thermostat part number is : 11717787870

My theory is that water is used to cool down the exhaust gas before it enters the intake manifold, because the intake is made out of plastic and it would melt if exposed to 600*C exhaust gas.
Water needs to be forced through the heat exchanger so flow has to go from the water pump feed side of the cooling system to the suction (radiator) side. The amount of cooling capacity needed varies with EGR usage, exhaust temperature etc so it needs a thermostat to prevent overcooling in certain conditions.
With the EGR bypassed, you still need it the thermostat to keep the cooling system intact. It costs 200 kr so worth changing it.

So yes, you still need the EGR thermostat.

EGR is disabled on mine - so no need to cool something that is not there.

Without EGR thermostat your car will not warm up properly at 88-92 C. Its part of the cooling system so it cant be eliminated.

At least over here in the States the 335ds(no EGR thermostat) with blocked EGRs tend to run just a few degrees colder. Nothing major at all.

Finally had my tstat replaced after having a new one sitting in my garage for the last two weeks. Went to start monitoring with Carly and it doesn't read correctly now. Stuck at 8196 deg C. Started monitoring through hidden menus and it's running perfectly at 88 deg C. Anyone ever seen this? There were a couple of recent updates to the Carly app., but it seems to be reading everything else correctly. Any ideas? I've tried everything short off deleting the app and re-installing it.

Maybe your adapter is "outdated" now. Try using the torque app or something similar and see if it reads temp properly. Or pull up the secret menu and see what's up.

I contacted them about the issue and this was the response. We will see if it gets fixed.


"This means, that we read out a wrong sensor, or the wrong oft he available
coolant temperatures.

I will try to find another param value ( It is sometimes difficult, because
in our database there are up to 2000 possible parameters)
For now, you can try our obd-parameters (on the obd functions). There it
should be a coolant temperature. This obd-parameter temperature should work,
because it is for the standard obd-params, which also other apps can read.

We will try to fix the coolant temperature in our bmw specific params, too.

HELPPP DPF Issues and low temps

Hi people,
Im hoping someone can please help me.

325d 2007 E90

Ive had the DPF light come on a few times, Plugged in Carly, realised im running way too low temps = 62 Celsius to 70 averaging about 65. Dreading the cost of replacing the DPF, guessed the temp was the problem. Read that the car running around that temp would be down to a faulty EGR thermostat, have replaced it but still stuck with the same issue. Three glow plug faults also came up on Carly, would this have an affect on the temp by any chance? I know the next step would be to replace the main stat, but have been told with those temps its not likley.

Any help would be much appreciated guys

Why wouldn't it be the t-stat? This last claim makes no sense. T-stats are notoriously failure prone to run cold. In fact it's one of the top 3 causes of diesels getting poor fuel economy. It's so common, nearly every diesel forum has sticky's about it every winter. It's probably the t-stat. Put it in a pot of boiling water and check it for yourself. They're only $60USD...

If you replace the EGR thermostat, you need to replace the main thermostat as well. And fix your glow plugs errors

For my BMW 320 D E90 2006 the only way to tell the temp is either the hidden menu or an obd tool.

Shouldn't take more than 2 hours to ACTUALLY do it for a DIY project. Book time is probably like 3-4 hours.

I have a 2010 335d. It was running around 145-150 ECT during the winter (40-50f). I replaced thermostat with OEM at the tune of 88 dollars US. Took about 2 hours and ETC is after warm up is ~188F.

I lost about 1 gallon of coolant during the replacement.

Some time ago my car had a noticeable decrease in mileage. Normally runs at around 35 MPG on highway and all of the sudden it ran 29 MPG. I had a hunch it could be that the engine is running cold so I checked the hidden menus and there it was. Engine temperature max. 65-67 °C. I happened to order the main thermostat before I even learned that it could also be the EGR thermo. Luckily it was causing the problem and changing the main thermostat did the trick. No problems since.

EGR deleted and DPF deleted now. As said earlier it will only have a minor effect on coolant temperature and my mileage has gone down ever so slightly, to about 33 MPG. But having that useless junk out of my car is way worth it after all the problems I had with it.

I have a question as to how to test a thermostat that is weak but not failing. I can hit 80-85C and stay there but my stop and go commute makes it hard to judge as opposed to a steady highway run.

I was idling the car and checked around 65-70 C the other day which lines are hot/cold. It was about 55F outside.
(refer to image of cooling system below)
I noticed that the left side coolant hose to radiator (that runs into the thermostat) was cold. (near the number 1/2 in diagram- blue colored in diagram)
The right side one to radiator was very warm (near "16" big red colored hose) and the radiator itself was hard to check because the AC one is in front of it.

Being that the coolant flow is from block to right side of radiator, through radiator and exits left side to be taken into the thermostat I'd think if my thermostat was shut (below 80C or so opening point), the red hose on the right would be much cooler- unless it heats up by sitting on the "hot side"

If the thermostat was prematurely open, the left side that goes into the thermostat would be running warm- right?

If anyone has recently done their thermostat on their 35d or 335d could check these 2 hoses at a coolant temp before 75C or so- but above 60, it would be helpful to diagnose a thermostat that opens early (or "leaks through")

Used protool to check my coolant temp last night. Never gets over 163F while driving higher than 50mph, below 50mph it gets down to 123F. When sitting still idling it gets over 200F. I think I'm screwed. Since there are 0 walkthroughs on how to drain and bleed this system I'm going to drive it three hours away to my indy mechanic to replace the thermo. Hopefully it makes the drive :|

Had the thermo replaced over the weekend. Temp now hovering around 197F. Reset my average MPG counter and got a steady 42mpg driving on the highway for 2 hours at around 70-80mph. MPG started out at 60 and then slowly dropped to 42.
