you could just do the thermostat, and check codes for the waterpump. The thermostat easily unbolts from the waterpump.

Checking back in here; my 328i's pump is still going strong at 115k. I just bought an '08 528i that's also on the original pump with 127k.

94K Pump died on the highway. Engine temp wasn't even that high and still went into YELLOW, then RED limp mode. Limped about 4 miles home, stopping every mile for about 5 minutes. Initial signs, fan on full speed at cold start for about a few weeks. No check engine light. Scanned on the night of the freeway incident and codes 2E82 DME ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP CUTOFF 2E81 DME ELECTRICAL COOLANT PUMP, SPEED DEVIATION. My oil pan is leaking, and had a recent oil filter housing leak that leaked FOREVER. This oil leaked down onto the water pump may have had something to do with...

So, today I changed my waterpump. 188,082 miles, it was still the original pump on the car!

a. Nov 2005, 330i, 6MT
b. preventative maintenance - but it was making an electrical buzzing sound which worried me, and when I took it off, the impeller shaft rattled and wobbled about - I don't think it was going to last much longer. That said, the car never overheated (in my time) and showed no real signs that it was gonna go.
c. £333 pump + £50 thermostat.
d. myself.
e. no damage yet.
f. no track as of yet, mostly longer journeys but do give it a hoon now and again.

Haven't been too active on here but I should give some info to help out the next generation of e90 owners. Here you go:

a. year / model / transmission - '06 330i Auto

b. did it actually fail or was this preventive maintenance? Failed! Overheated while driving someone to the airport in the summer. I did consider preventative swap a year or two before but never ended up doing that.

c. how much did the repair cost (and indicate labor vs parts)?
Parts:
Thermostat - $140
Water Pump - $546
Coolant - $85 (2 gallons)
Total - $780

Labor - $360

d. was it replaced at indy or dealer? Indy

e. was there any other damage caused as a result?
Nope, continued on another 10+ miles in limp mode to get to airport. Opened hood and cooled off for a bit, then drove to mall and let sit for couple of hours. Added water, drove 3 miles and overheated again. Parked and called tow truck from there.

f. do you track your vehicle? (DO NOT reply if you participate in canyon carving, street racing, etc.). strictly referring to auto-x, road course, drift and drag.

Nope, occasional spirited driving but no tracking. Had car since '10 with 42k. Failed at 86k

Overall, this was the first real failure or maintenance issue I had with this car in the then 6 years of ownership.

a. year / model / transmission
- 2009 E90 328i AT with 110k km (70k mi)

b. did it actually fail or was this preventive maintenance?
- Preventative maintenance. There were no symptoms of a failing water pump.

c. how much did the repair cost (and indicate labor vs parts)?
- Wahler thermostat and Pierburg pump were $330 and BMW coolant (concentrate, 1 gal) was $20 from FCP. The parts were exactly the same as the factory parts I replaced but without BMW logos. The pump came with the three mounting bolts. I used around 1.8 gal of coolant (50:50 mix) to refill the system.

d. was it replaced at indy or dealer?
- DIY in about 5 hours on jack stands.

e. was there any other damage caused as a result?
- No

f. do you track your vehicle? (DO NOT reply if you participate in canyon carving, street racing, etc.). strictly referring to auto-x, road course, drift and drag.
- No

a. 2006 330i manual
b. Failed on highway on 90 degree day. Somewhere around 114k miles. Got the dash warning to stop running the car. Pulled over, let it set for about 10 minutes while I investigated online. Turned off AC, opened the windows and ran the heat to cool the coolant more than normal. Made it the 30 miles home at normal highway speed in this condition with no more dash warnings after resetting.
c. Parts were $336.82 including water pump, thermostat, BMW coolant, and new bolts.
d. Replaced myself
e. Luckily no other damage. Car still runs great!
f. I do track my car, but not before this. I have only owned it since 100k miles, so no idea how it was treated beforehand.

I'm replacing my 2012 128i water pump and thermostat at 61K as a proactive measure. I have replaced a lot of parts as a hedge against failures. If the 128i can give me another 5 years and 60K miles of relatively trouble free driving, I'll be happy and glad that I did...

$200 for pump, thermo, and bolts? This must've been one of those eBay Waterpump kits.

How is it holding up? Any issues?

NO issues, they are all plastic ones these days if they OEM spec or aftermarket all the same honestly if they are going to fail they are going to fail.

This is for N52 owners ONLY. Please vote yes IF and ONLY IF YOUR PUMP ACTUALLY FAILED. If you replaced it for precautionary (preventive maintenance) purposes, do NOT VOTE at ALL. This will skew the data. However do feel free to post details in a written response below.

If you did replace your water pump (preventive or because of failure), please also provide the following info:

a. year / model / transmission
b. did it actually fail or was this preventive maintenance?
c. how much did the repair cost (and indicate labor vs parts)?
