A piggyback is simple and can get you some zip but a tune comes in many varieties to suit your performance goals *plus* you can "tune out" undesirable components like SCR, DPF, and EGR so that the car knows they are gone and no CEL puts a suntan on your forehead.

Piggybacks like JBD is a "plug and play" little box that intercept signals and adjust accordingly to dump more fuel.. so this is a cheap way to get extra HP, this is good for people on a budget or people that don't plan on keeping the car for long.. all you have to do is pull the JBD out and you are back to stock numbers.

Chip tuning like JR,BPC, etc. actually change the code in your DDE.. in a nutshell the car's permanently coded to perform A LOT better (if you plan on selling the car you will need to have the DDE re-flashed to come back to stock numbers). This option is much better but more expensive... totally worth it if you plan on keeping the car for a while. Most people in this forum go with JR 2.8 or BPC 2+ both of options unlock the full potential of the D without the need to swap any stock parts... but you will need to do deletes to avoid issues.

Thanks for the details and in-depth info. The car I'm looking into has a piggyback already and I'll probably leave it on for a bit as long as it's not turning the dash into a Christmas tree or the dreaded limp mode. Eventually I'll do a tune, but I figured an exhaust would be first that way I don't have to tune it again after the new pipes.

Actually if you are wanting to do your exhaust you must do the chip tuning first.. when you mess with the exhaust you are dealing with a bunch of sensors in the DPF and the SCR and the DEF tanks, the only way to avoid issues is to tune the car first.. that's why tuning is so much better.. all those sensors plus many many other things get disabled so they don't interfere with mods you do on the car.

I highly suggest you go look for the upgrade threads that tell you exactly what you need to do and how to do it.. this car is VERY temperamental if you don't do things right.. read read read.. (not trying to be rude) it is imperative you educate yourself very well before you start doing stuff to the D.. I cant stress it enough.. you'll thank me later.

I've had the JBD diesel tuner for about a month and drove about 1,500 miles with it. After I installed it, I felt a big increase of power. Driving on the highway, you can easily go from speed limit to 90+ mph with just a small push on the gas pedal. No, it won't make it a diesel M3, but it will definitely increase the power you feel.

I don't know how it compares to a tune, but IMO, it's a good deal for some cheap horsepower.

Torqu3, it would be great to here where the X5 mods are same and where they differ. I know they use the same EGR delete pipe/racepipe. I don't know that is done with the "X5 only" low pressure EGR.

Looking at X5 specific downpipe looks to perhaps delete the connection to the inlet to low pressure EGR. I don't know specifics for removal of the low press EGR as well as what it connects to down stream. I will learn soon enough but pointing to areas of needed enhancement. Perhaps what i ask is buried in here and I haven't tripped over it yet. thanks

There is a flange piece sold by BPC and AArodriquez that blocks the low pressure EGR port on the backside on the LP turbo.

X5 delete pipe is longer than the 335d and the buzzken delete comes with the SCR delete section as well.

Other than that, performance mods and deletes are the same.

My X5 is done and it's amazing!

Ever expanding and updating this. I understand that it's a lot to take in, but it really is for the best that you know this information. Being knowledgeable with these cars can save you thousands in shop fees.

Finished the deletes on 1-3-18. I only lack the bimmertune, swirl flap blanks and clean the intake manifold while there. I don't expect to see much CBU since it's a 48,000 mile X5.

I would suggest adding this post for the vacuum line replacement. The pics and captions are perfect. I did a full swap in maybe 45 minutes. The best parts are understanding how to disconnect plugs. Those things are rubix cubes.

Bmw 335d simple reliable tuning

Hello everyone If anyone can help from the UK

I'am in the process of purchasing another bmw 335d msport e92 after my first one was written of due to idiot drivers :/!
My previous one was a 2008 bmw e92 with a remap and dpf filter removal was pushing out 330bhp and 705nm perfect for me at the time didn't need any more then that to be honest and had no problems with her for 5 months before the accident.

Could anyone in the UK confirm any good tuning company's for this vehicle
2010 Bmw 335d e92 shape as I would like the same tune but have seen some people having problems with boost hoses etc and I don't fancy having any problem with a remap DPF filter tune.
Any help is much appreciated
I don't mind having a little more power just don't wish to have a tune pushing like 400bhp 800nm etc cause I'm guessing running costs problems a more to keep onto of just want something fun and pain free.

Can we add a howto on glow plugs and the controller?
I just did it on my x5 35d, which is similar.

Some pointers that should be emphasized:
-Warm up engine before removing the intake manifold to prevent the plugs from breaking in the head!
-Make sure you feel the connectors for the gp controller click in.
-After that, don't start the engine, but key in- ignition on- scan for codes and clear them and scan again. Of course there will be codes for things disconnected BUT make sure you don't see any glow plug codes to confirm that your installation is correct- if so, then you can go and put the intake manifold, etc back! (in other threads I read cases where poor souls had to remove the intake again due to a bad connection to the controller!)

Facebook is typically easier, but judging by your posted location(Fitzgerald, GA) the best shop I know of that is somewhat local is AARodriguez Corp. www.tunemyeuro.com is the website. They do a lot with BMW diesel.
