The best indication of how quick a car really is over a quater mile is the trap speed.

Good write up, awesome corsa!! I remember when they fitted the calibra turbo engine into Nova's and tuned them to 300BHP - A friend had one, and it was bloody fast

Nice write up Carlos and some great pics.
The DXB made a good show on behalf of us Derv burners and you were not far off James' awesome motor.

Looking forward to your writeup on the DMS remap, + your other report, that money you received from the old Beemer is not going to go far is it

Those Guys over at ET are gonna spend every penny of it

By the way, the DMS remap is a pussycat compared to Simon's,so that extra bhp you received courtesy of BMW is going to be well needed,Tony,Helen + other Emap mapped cars would wee all over you

Bring it on Fandango

Ace pics!

Please I never went and ran my heavy lumbering 325i vert lol!

Well done tho guys - the times were very impressive and the pics even more so!

(Last time I ran the 'pod was in my '71 beetle 1.5 during Bug-Jam in the summer of 1990!! - knackered up the big ends as it had burnt all the fresh oil during the journey down there, ha ha)

Ahhhhhh Santa Pod... what a cultural experience!!!

Was good fun - have learnt an awful lot about the scene of modded Corsas and Escorts and stuff... Crappy Corsa running a 12-sec 1/4 mile?! hahaha that was funny... blew James into the weeds..

Discovered a few things about our various cars too... firstly, ignore the differences in relative car positioning on the photos - the fact that one car is four lengths or two lengths or two centimetres ahead means nothing, as that can all be put down to reaction time.

The main variance in time differences (and I varied from 13.7 to 14.1) is entirely down to how to launch the car with an auto gearbox. It isn't as simple as mashing your foot to the floor - if it was, then all the times for each car would be identical run to run. I did six runs in total (same as James - Carlos I think must have done 10+), and by the end still hadn't worked out how to launch the car properly to get the fastest start. James was the same - his fastest time of 13.4 was down in DS mode with the DTC button pushed once. My 13.7 time was done in full Manual, with all traction systems off.

In practice, James' car was the quickest, as indicated by the trap speed (which actually is the most informative figure of all). Carlos' car was quicker than mine and most significantly had more pull around the 60-80mph range where he would gain on me. Curiously though I would begin to catch up again around 95mph and upwards. In the real world Carlos' remapped 335d would be much easier to drive quickly than mine, as I would have to rev the nuts off mine to keep up with him. Not night and day difference though...

Comparing my car with James' Proceed - he's quicker in almost all areas and continues to pull away at 100mph, although the difference is not as much as I expected. I put that down to the extra weight of the convertible (although I was also carrying around 40kg of champagne in the boot of mine!!!)

What's most interesting for me though is that my best 60ft time was 2.05 secs, and that's with me not getting IMO the best launch possible. I should have brake boosted to 1500rpm and then gone, but everytime I got caught early into going at the green light, thinking about reaction time rather than the best start (the 1/4 mile times aren't dependent on reaction time). With a bit more practice, a lightweight Carlos instead of a heavyweight Tony, and an empty boot, I think a sub-2 second 60ft time would be possible for my car as it is. Compare that to Carlos and James who managed 2.1/2.2 seconds, that really shows up the effect of the LSD.

In hindsight, we should have down runs with set baselines - ie. DS mode, full traction on, no brake boost. Just pedal mash and go. Then that would have given the most comparable times.

Fun day out - mega tired at the end (hadn't slept the night previous) and passed out around 6pm (slept for 16 hours!) Would I do it again? Probably, yes, but won't be in a hurry to do so. I'll go again once the remap is done (another thread for another day) and we'll see how it goes then.

Bottom line from the day's activities? They're all quick cars, whether diesel or petrol, and in the real world, the 335d remapped is IMO the best all-round car available for sensible(ish) money. If only I weren't a rev-hungry petrol-headed diesel-phobe...

Looks like a fun time was had by all, enjoyed the writeup and pics. That corsa must be sooo much fun to own! Good to see the DXB is as good as the dyno day suggested - really must get me one of those ninja tractors next time I change car

I know its no comparison but my bike runs 10.6 @134mph (apparently) wish I had the skill and balls to make it do that

Compare that to the Hayabusa Turbo (!!!) that did a 9.67 sec 1/4 mile with a trap speed of 157mph!!!!!!! (and on that run, he didn't even hook the bike up properly at the start)

You could see he was scared shitless at the start - I don't think he even contemplated doing a half-power start, let alone full-power...!!!!

RIGHT FIRSTLY

its JAMES being done by a corsa colsen mate.

2 GIBBO:

i did a 13.9@102 stock

now done 13.5 @105

0-100:13.5 stock i rekon
now 0-100: 12.5 i rekon

Big difference mate.

Just put it into perspective,

i ran with my mates E36 M3, over the quarter our times were indentical but i was 2mph faster just starting to pull away.

But he has M diff and a car which is better for launches.

On the road last night (privae road) i pulled 8 car lenghts on him... The 335d does its thing in gear rolling.

NOT standing start shit.

so even tho on the strip we were near on idenctical, i blitzd him on the road.. Now this is what im talking about with E46 M3's also.

Tony did a 60ft time 1 tenth quicker than me, but by the end of the 1/4mile i was 2 tenths and 2 mph faster, thats quite alot.... in gear a re-mapped 335d would pull heavily from the stock 335i, just look at what happened with me and my friend in the M3, Identical time but i blitz him on the road. I was actually quicker than Tony at the strip, the ''real word'' advantage woukd be much larger.

James car proved its quick, he trapped at 107, so there is more in it than a 13.4

I feel i could have gone a few tenths quciker.. a 13.0 is not out of bounds thats for sure.

Hi mate, i did run with my mates E36 M3. ON the strip both did 13.5, he was 0.1 ahead after 60ft. I was 2 mph faster by the end.

On the road he didnt see which way i went
