Just to update lights should arrive around Mon 1 Feb.

I've ordered a few extras just in case anyone else wants to come on board.

I have a pre-LCI E90 with Mars performance taillights, I'll check tonight what type of reverse light bulb I have

Hi everyone, just wanted to confirm that the lights arrived today.

I am a bit snowed under with my main job (nothing to do with lighting) and trying to direct the carpenters with our reno. So I'll need a couple of days to get sorted.

I'll also need a volunteer in Sydney to test our the special Option 3 - E92/93 LCI reverse lights before we send them out just to be 100% sure there are no issues, ie., error free.

Just keep in mind any LED upgrade will require coding, even if they don't throw error codes.

When you start up the car, the lighting system tests all the halogen bulbs to make sure they work properly. This also happens periodically while you are driving. This results in a flickering of LED lights on startup and periodically while you are driving on the road.

This is because these checks are designed for testing halogen bulbs even when you are not using them. The system will send a short pulse to test the halogen bulb, enough to determine if the bulb is blown but not enough to light up the bulb. But with the responsiveness of an LED, it does activate and flicker.

You just need to disable all the 'cold' checks via coding. Do not drive the car without coding as the LEDs will flicker/flash while you are driving and you'll probably get pulled over by the cops. You can disable the cold checks via BMW NCSExpert software or via the Carly phone app.

Maybe you should bring them to the Sydney meet tomorrow night and anyone who ordered them who are local, can come pick them up and enjoy the meet

For guys whom have retrofitted LCI taillights and coded them also, they wouldn't have this issue though would they Vince?

Yes, you would still have this issue. The stock reverse bulbs that come with the LCI lights are halogen, so the cold checks that cause flicker are still present. The LCI retrofit coding only removed checks for LED brake lights and indicators.

ahh right...

So coding to remove checks for reverse lights must also be done then?

Yep only the cold checks need to be removed for the reverse lights. Leave the warm checks alone so you can detect a bulb failure if the LED ever fails.

That's interesting about the cold checks. I actually like the flicker, looks great at night, though as you say the pod my not like it but you'd have to be unlucky but if it is easy to fix with Carly then it's worth coding out the cold checks as you say.

Yeah, I was thinking of coming along. Though isn't it next week? Have they decided on the meet point?

If it's easy enough to do the light swap we can also code it out on the night

I have got Carly app, but it doesn't say Cold or Warm check?
It only has option like "checking bulb - reverse" not mentioning about cold check or warm check!?

Sure, I think given the lights are error free then the coding is really optional.

I'm not sure if you would really notice the cold checks in the day anyway and in the night how often does it actually check and I don't think they really flash for long?

Anyway, I will send out a group email later today re: pickup or delivery.

In my opinion coding is not optional. The cold checks happen every couple minutes or so and last around 3-4 seconds. Enough to annoy other people on the road and draw police attention if you were both driving along the same stretch of road for a while.

Would definitely notice it during the day, the LEDs are brighter than the stock halogens, and the reverse lights are designed to be visible during the day to indicate you are reversing.

I guess the Carly app only removes both the checks then? I've never used Carly, only NCSExpert. Its much better to only remove the cold check and leave the warm check in. This allows you to detect a faulty LED bulb when you put the car into reverse.

I think if our E91 was doing this I would have noticed it, maybe it is unique to some models. I just went & watched for 5mins & not flashing but maybe it needs to be in drive?
