I'm getting a loaner tomorrow. I am going to demand keeping it until airbag replaced.

I called my service center. Peter Pan BMW in the SF Bay Area. They said they do not have the parts to do the airbag recall at this time but I would be contacted when they do.
Then they told me adamately DO NOT SELL THE CAR until the recall is complete. I asked if I should drive it and they said that is up to me but just not to sell it lol. |

If my car doesn't get driven for a year that means I can put miles on the loaner instead. Also, since I have their car maybe they'll move mine up the list.

So what's everyone's thought on driving their cars? Has anyone successfully gotten a loaner from BMW?
According to the website, this is their stance on it: Q10. Can I continue to drive my vehicle? Yes. BMW is not aware of a ruptured inflator in any of its vehicles associated with this recall. However, when you receive a letter asking you to have this service performed by an authorized BMW center, please do so as soon as possible. If you are not the only driver of this vehicle, please advise all other drivers of this important information. I wouldn't mind getting a loaner vehicle, but I also am hesitant to leave the car at the dealership for that long (mine is always garaged and on a battery tender ect ect...)

The less time my car spends at the dealership, the better.

Darrrrrnnnn yooouuuuu takata!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was slated to pick up a CPO 135i this weekend. Dealership called me to inform me that they cannot sell the car until its fixed. I know takata ramped production from 100k per month to nearly a million a month, but I'm curious as to how long the wait may be. I have borrowed my dad's truck (extra vehicle), but if its going to be 6 months I'm going to have to go purchase a different car.
The only thing that I have going for me is that the car is located in Georgia - which is within the top priority zone for replacement. What a complete bummer. |

Two of the three of ours are affected. Our 325i is not affected while our 330i and 328xi are.
Having been thru a recall on our Ford for an airbag related issue, took approximately a year from official notification of recall to notification that parts were available. I do wander how a recall of this magnitude is handled as far as official notification and notification of parts availability. Does BMW notify sequentially by VIN, and when parts do come in I'm sure it is first come first serve basis. Just hoping that the recall notice for parts availability arrives at the same time for both cars so that I can schedule the repair at the same time.

So how many cars currently in production are subject to Takata recall.
This issue has been around for three years. The industry should have stopped production as soon as the possible problem emerged. Oh yea, I forgot- the stockholders might have fired the Board.

How do they know to contact you if you aren't the original owner?
My car was a US car imported to Canada. Now it's back in FL but I haven't changed over the plates yet. Still have Ontario plates. Do I just goto the dealer? I doubt they have my info to send me a letter. |

BTW, Takata is still supplying the automotive industry with ammonium nitrate propellant airbags through 2018 with permission from NHTSA with the condition that they can be recalled or demonstrated safe by 2019.
According to Reuters on Feb 22, 2016- In addition to the current 30 million vehicles recalled so far, there may be as many as 120 million more to come. Takata airbag equipped vehicles from 2000-2105 model years total 260 to 285 million units. This is a very big problem!

I was just poking a little fun at your expense because, to be fair, that was a pretty big one to miss! It has been covered by practically every news outlet, globally if I'm not mistaken, for over a year. To be honest, I thought that once you learned what you had missed you would have a "eureka" moment and have a little chuckle wondering how in the world you could have missed that one... IMHO, your reply was an poignant example of being rude and belittling... But I get why you said it and I hope I've cleared things up. I didn't make that comment to make my prick hard. I promise. Congratulations on closing your deal and finally coming out from under that rock! ![]() |

Back to the subject at hand...
Is there a comprehensive list of new vehicles that are using Takata inflators? Excuse me while I put on my tin foil hat, but I'd like to avoid them if possible. I will probably be in the market for a new car in 3-4 months, which I'd like to tell myself I'll keep for 5+ years, so this is an area of concern for me. I assume it will take quite some time to phase out the ammonium nitrate propellant? |
