"Need" to, no, recommend to, yes. Purpose: Resetting VANOS adaptations helps the DME to relearn the airflow changes quicker.

My understanding of VANOS adaptations is that it's adaptations for the VANOS control itself. It's affected by oil viscosity and solenoid condition etc. Not air flow. I thought there are other adaptations for air flow related stuff?

I am also going to adapt the Mr. 5 style intake in the phase 2 of this with aluminum piping routed to the front grills.

& when will you complete phase 2...curious of the outcome..may do the same if it yields results.

I was wondering how many pages I was going to get through before someone tried this haha.. I'm interested in any gains for the stock air box like the z4 lid as well since i recently switched back to the stock box with an upgr8 dry filter drop in.

Is it possible to somehow fit dual cones in the stock airbox? That's what I want to see

Not really no. I have a couple of airboxs laying around and have been measuring up for this and it won't work due to the slope in the air box lid. Been toying with the idea of making a custom lid with more height just to be able to fit a couple cones inside the air box, it actually looks pretty easy after watching this vid

Why did you remove the internal fins? My guess is they're there to help keep airflow laminar as it finds its way to the filter. A dyno-based comparison of stock vs. modified would be *really* interesting.

Post up pics when you make a custom intake. Great video I doubt I could do something like that but if you can and make a airbox with dual cones in it I'm willing to buy from you lol

On the E89 Z4 BMW made a "taller" cover to allow more airflow through the crevice as they knew where the restriction was

General N54 vs E89 Z4 Intake box cover

vs the E89 Z4

[/QUOTE]

The 1M appears not to have the taller Z4 cover...

If WedgePerformance wants to use my Z4 lid, or DCIs for some T&E, I would be glad to help the cause. My car definitely seems to like the Z4 lid with the cooler temperatures. I would love to do some testing at the track, under similar conditions, to see what if any difference would be between the two.
