Will let you know if this improves things after a week or two. If things don't improve it won't hurt my hip pocket as I get free fuel on the company lease but it's against my ecological principles and will stop me getting another Beemer. |

Right.......Mr Indie had a wee look while the car did its spluttery start up this morning.
So, he has told me that the computer is showing all 4 glow plugs at fault and injectors 1 & 2 So, obviously starting at the cheapest point i would expect to change the glowplugs first but did i read somewhere that all 4 plugs out would be more indicative of teh glowplug controller rather than the plugs? I also recall reading that the glowplugs are not only used at startup to get the engine goign but were constantly used to monitor conditions in teh cylinder? As usual, advice appreciated Regards Andy |

So right.....
Took myself off today down to ECParts and grabbed a wee set of Beru glow plugs.....£12x4 thanks. Interesting, these are identical to the ones that came out and also the ones that my local stealers wanted 22+vat each for.......BMW box tax. Annneeeewwwwaaay. I would like to point out that changing the plugs on an E91 320d is complete and utter ball ache. I think i said a couple of hours in a previous thread but fuck me solid......what a rotten stripping match. Must have taken me a good 3 hours to do them followed by the obligatory half hour dropped bolt/floor tray out fiasco........... WIll hopefully see a reduction in blue puffiness and lumpy idle tomorrow morning......if not, next stop, injectors 1 and 2. Expect much more swearing if that is the case. Regards Andy |

And also FAO: HighlandPete,
I checked my temps from ice cold this morning and after about 15-20 minutes of driving.....the coolant temperature was at 84, but did not go above that at all. Regards Andy |

Don't know about anyone else but my economy is improving with the milder weather. i only use mine for tootling round the doors on short journeys and my average mpg was about 32.5 but over last couple of weeks its up to 37mpg. Its either the weather or the car had a fault which has corrected itself.

Here's the results of a week spent trying to improve economy. All driving is around town, short trips and school run, often with a cold engine. Gallons are UK gallons.
1. Tipped some injector cleaner into the tank and thrashed the car hard for a couple of days then resumed normal snail's pace. Economy improved from around 26 mpg to around 31 mpg 2. Fitted a p-tronic box Economy improved to around 35 mpg with the added bonus of a hugely noticeable hike in performance (feels more like the 123D I test drove a while back and very difficult to resist flooring it !) Will be keen to see how fast and frugal the car is on the highway now. I think a quick run to Germany for a thrash on the autobahn is in order. Will check top speed with TomTom as the BMW speedo over-reads quite a bit. When the car was new it was returning up to 55 mpg at a steady 124km/h (130 indicated) and topped out at an indicated 220km/h (at that speed I didn't look at the tomtom) Side note : The BMW navigation system is useless but the iDrive screen makes an ideal place to sit your tomtom ! |

What injector cleaner would you recommend? Sounds like that is worth a try...

FWIW mine is now booked in at a dealer for mid april. Microfilters replaced as service items, MAF and injectors looked at as a possible warranty claim. I will post a thread up / let you know here when I have results.

Here,
Just thought I would drop a wee update into this thread. GOOD NEWS TOO. One of the "wee" jobs I did on the motor there was to replace all of the glow plusg with brand spanky new Beru glow plugs. Bit of a wanker of a job to be honest (4 grazed knuckles) but a good learning experience for this engine. Basically a serious stripping job to get to them (scuttle panel, brace, engine cover, inlet manifold all off etc). Anyway, all done and out for a nice drive yesterday on a full tank. Not necessarily a light drive either....a good wee bit of boosting there. Looked at the trip computer when i got home and we had covered 60 miles and for the first time EVER, the range was showing as 500 miles. So correct me if I am wrong, but a 60 litre tank, 13.2 gallons based on a 560 mile range equates to 42 mpg (thats right isnt it?) Oh, and the OBC is showing the average of 36.7 but I havent reset it lately. So, I think I can tentatively say that changing the glow plugs has bumped the range from a tank measured 420 to 560 miles. We will see how the final mileage pans out but if that stays, I will be SOOOO HAPPY! YES. REALLY. Changing the glowplugs gave me an extra 140 miles to a tank. So as a few others have said, these MUST be used when the engine is running to measure cylinder conditions or do something else. Mega, if you havent done this try it matey. I will still get the injectors checked and possibly replace the MAF but fingers crossed, progress at last. Regards Andy |

Wouldn't it be better to reset the OBC??
When I fill my A6 up it often says 620 miles to fill up, however I never get more than 400 miles. Drive down a B road at 60mph and it will go through the roof, 15 minutes in traffic and it can be down to saying 250 mile range. The range is only worked out by the amount of fuel remaining and the consumption over the last 10 miles or 15 minutes, so hardly accurate. |
