The area under the rear diff is open, not closed so you can jack the car up without any issues.

Jacking it up wouldn't be the issue, the airflow over the diff casing would be... just not sure if it would cause an issue. I'm not saying it will cause an issue, just wondering if this has been considered.

I know Brian has had the car on the track with the full setup without any overheating issues.

OP, is this still on? I read you did some R&D for the E92 already. Plan on releasing the specs and dimensions of the aero kit or perhaps even releasing a full product?

Hey guys, sorry for the lack of updates on this. This is actually my first time on e90post for a couple years now. My apologies for the lack of response to PMs! Things have been busy with local car things as well as Indy/USF2000 activities.

Things had progressed substantially since this first kit (almost embarrassing looking back at it), most notably I've started making underbody panels, ductwork, airboxes, headlight replacements, etc out of composites. I've built a few systems for a handful of different cars over the past couple years, but time hasn't allowed me to make anything other than one-off aero systems and a handful of systems for E90s.

In any case- here's the current E90 version that was used for 2013, along with different splitter lengths/strengths. The best benefit of making things out of carbon is the strength - and negating the need to have any form of cable supports for the front splitter- even with the 3/8" splitter two grown adults can stand/bounce on it, and with the 1/2" splitter I've had 660lbs of manmeat bouncing on it and actually bottoming out the splitter on the ground. The newest one only had 4 bolts for up/down strength instead of 6, but also has added strength from expansion areas in front of the front wheels.

Anyways - here are some pics. (Please disregard the dirty underbody - I didn't realize these pics would show as much detail) Feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to respond in a timely manner

Glad to see this back. Surprised you haven't worked out how to use the exhaust for added down force like in F1. Any pictures of your f2000 machine? Amazing engineering as usual.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

I've definitely pondered making a legitimate blown diffuser, but for some reason I'm terrified of fire. There's really no reason for my heightened fear, since the exhaust temps at the rear of the exhaust system are relatively low, and themotec sheets with fiberglass airdams should protect against any conductive, radiant or convective heat transfer. Still though, I just fear any risk of fire I've tested the carbon underbody panels to 500*F with conductive heat transfer (500* pipe sitting directly on the panel), with only softening of the epoxy, but any higher than that and it's definitely possible to melt enough epoxy and ignite the carbon or oxidize the kevlar. Either way, it's just something that I don't see being worth the risk

I don't actually drive in the USF2000 series, rather am the Chassis engineer/data guy for a newer team. Here's a picture of the car from St Petes a few weeks ago

It's a Van Diemen DP08 chassis with the Mazda engine, and this year they homologated a new 5 speed Hewland gearbox.

Unfortunately no races in the northeast region this year, except for Indy being at Pocono. We don't follow Indy for most of the Oval courses, but a majority of the street and road course weekends.

I'm sure it's a blast to drive. I need to find a way into the sport while they still have proper trannys, no sequentials. I'm doing the bmw m school later this year and theyre all DCTs...a little bummed out.

How do you like the Mazda compared to the zetec and the new hewland compared to those ld200s

So far so good! I believe the Mazda is 10-15hp higher than the Pinto/Zetec engines, and all around they seem pretty solid. The gearbox itself is awesome - sequential 5 speed with decent gearing (sealed gears this year as well), but was kind of a scramble to get it installed and make our own brackets for neutral/reverse, fix all the machining errors, etc within the week before the season opener. Switching gearboxes the last-minute decision by Indycar, and a lot of the smaller teams didn't have it prior to winterfest...and since we're based out of Minnesota, we didn't get any shakedown time with the car, and paid the price for it at the season opener with totally preventable mechanical failures.

This is my first year playing with open wheel cars, so it's been a bit of a learning curve compared to my sports car experience. It helps that we have limited spring rates to experiment with, but with unlimited suspension geometry. Combine that with the Pi data system, it's almost data overload, and each corner tells a unique story and has unique ways to improve...making executive decisions a bit harder, haha.

If you or anyone wants to come to a Indy race let me know and I can get some pretty good passes!

I thought of starting to FF cars since no aero to account for and all depends on suspension setup. I would love to pick your brain one day before I jump in and an Indy race sounds great. Anything at VIR?
Have you been on apex speed forum? Good group of guys with a lot of experience.

Nice! Yeah if you can afford to get to some of the regional or National races, FF can be an absolute blast'!

Unfortunately no Open wheel stuff at VIR this year, but there is a PCA Club Race mid-June I wouldn't mind going to with some Porsche friends
