that's different. if you spend so much time in the car, it should be as best as it can be. I mean that's a lot of hours, if you spend them in a sh.tty environment that's just doing your life disservice. All I was pointing out that bMW is not that stupid with having a 320i or 318i, emissions isn't the only reason. If you want a great chassis, safe, good looking car, you dont have to go for 335d, 320i might do the same job most of the time in city.
i also like good cars. so that's why id take a used 320i versus some newer peugeot or whatever.

To get back on topic. What some of the younger or newer members may not realise is that the engine size argument is almost a cultural thing which started to develop decades ago. and is not just about the love of power. Back in the late '60s, early '70s when there was beginning to be more money in the country to spend on cars, BMW were beginning to make a name for themselves and Mercedes, which already had the name, were getting more popular.
In those days, with any make of car, if you wanted the smooth, refined, well appointed car, you had to buy one of the bigger cars which also had a bigger engine. You couldn't buy a smaller engined car unless it was also on the small side so getting a smaller engined, refined, and well appointed car was virtually impossible. In those days, (and probably still true) a bigger engine didn't actually cost the manufacturer that much (e.g. in 1975, a 2.0 litre Capri was £40 more than a 1.6 and a 3 litre was £80 more). So, in order to justify differentiation of engine size, most manufacturers added kit to the bigger engined car which wasn't even available as an option on the smaller engined car. With me so far? This meant that to get a nice car, you needed a model with a bigger engine and so a good car was associated with a powerful engine. Today, at least in the premium market, you can get all the luxury, equipment and style, etc. in a smaller engined car without having to fork out for a powerful engine if you don't want to. This is a good thing. Now to get back to the 4 cyl. vs 6 cylinder argument. In the mid sixties, Mercedes, after decades of 6 and 8 cylinder cars brought out a 4 cylinder car. There was outrage amongst the purists and they didn't regard them as real Mercs because Mercs had 6 cylinders and it was just an obvious move my Mercedes to sell more cars by having models available at a lower price point - which was true - but apparently not pukka. The joke is, when BMW really started to make a name for itself, it was with the 2000ti, the 2002ti and the 2002 turbo - all of which had FOUR cylinders. But then BMW introduced 6 cylinder engines which were silky smooth and powerful and they inherited the myth that a REAL BMW had 6 cylinders. I think that one's liking for a car can be separated into the car itself and it's power output. If one of your most important requirements is a bloody good powerplant, then get a six. If you only want power enough to get past slow people safely and to progress at a good rate, then get a four and save money which could be used for more options, and reduced running costs. When I got my 320d, I hesitated over what I would buy. I had a 70 mile daily commute and felt really aware of that when choosing between the 320d and the 325i (only £500 difference in price and the 325i had better standard kit). But on the running cost basis, I chose the 320d having forgotten (lost?) my appreciation for a reasonably powerful N/A engine. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. My situation changed after eight months and I'm now a low annual mileage driver so the running costs argument fell through a hole in the floor and if I had taken the 325i I wouldn't be worrying that one day my DPF would fail landing me with a bill for £1,400. But, at no time have I ever really suffered because the 320d is underpowered next to a 325i and I certainly was able to keep up with the rest of the guys on the lively "excursions" at the UK and Northern meets - as the others could confirm. So, if you want the big engine and you can afford it - go for it. If you'd rather spend the extra money on something else but want to have a three because you really like the car - and not just for the power of the engine - also go for it. And yes, there has been, over the last six years, the odd person who seems to look down their noses at 4 cylinder cars, but there have been very few. It's just that, being the internet and all you read are words, some people interpret support and enthusiasm for sixes in particular, as rubbishing of the fours when that was not the intent. |

Another weird thread dredge.
Anyhoo, on any car forum I've been on, there's always a sense that the most powerful model is the best to own. It's nothing new on here. There's probably a bit of superiority and inferiority complex going on "but it's like that and that's the way it is, huuhh!". I've wanted the next rung up the ladder for a while, but my gf is right, why do I need more power...? I hold back a lot on the road and drive within the speed limits. |
