Does anyone know if a hitch for a 335 will fit the 335d that has removed the stock exhaust?
I understand the gas 335 wont fit the diesel. Are the 335d's stock mufflers the reason why a 335i hitch wont fit?

I believe the main issue is the DEF tank, which changes the routing of exhaust, placement of the mufflers, floor of the trunk, etc.

No doubt, but $400 pays for lots of beer

I donno, it took a lot of beer to get that damn uhaul hitch on my car. Hell to was supposed to be a 2 hour job...... I think a lot of folks regret doing the self install. If I had to do it over again, I'd pay uhaul their 75 to install on this car with this hitch.

My problem was I couldn't get the damn thing to wedge up inside the rear bumper, and I ended up removing the rear bumper cover. Which means removing the tail lights, etc. for the time I spent on it, I would gladly have paid someone else 75 to f with it. But it's done now. The hitch design is not for easy install and binds into the metal bumper clips

This is the 3rd hitch I've done and by far the hardest, simply because it's a bad design. I agree the other options would be easier to install, but you can save the money and go with the less expensive uhaul hitch and have the chimps at uhaul hammer it in. Still come out for less money. Plus have them throw in some trailer wiring too, so you can really tow.

There's no arguing that, but that also included the can module/wiring harness and a locking receiver so that narrows the gap of what you get for the $$. I'll happily pay a little more to have something that's OE level engineered and leaves nothing hanging below the rear bumper when the hitch is out.

I have put hitches on two cars in the last 12 years and both were installed by U-Haul and were great. Highly recommended......

I went for budget hitch as I only needed for bike carrier. The bike carrier cost almost double what the uhaul hitch was. I'm super happy with bike carrier I got. 80 mph and the bikes were rock solid on platform.

For install, I thought it was reasonable. I've had Indy and dealer work on my car and both were careless in losing fasteners and little parts. I didn't want it half a$$ed and always pay attention to the little things. My m sport valence wasn't torn up nor abused and its removal made the job much easier. We all have different needs though. I have a full size truck for pulling things.

I recently had my local shop install a U-Haul hitch on my 335d. The hitch was about $200 and the install $250, wish it was $75!

Wow, that is pricey! Does that include the trailer wiring as well? Sometimes they quote the wiring and hitch install in the same price.

No, just the hitch, no wiring. I know that the rear bumper had to be loosened to get everything installed. I was billed for 2.8 hours.

Okay then. A few beers and 2 hours is well worth not paying $250 in my book. I've had to uninstall and reinstall the hitch during subsequent projects so it was valuable for me to know how to deal with it. Reinstall last time was about an hour now that I have the technique figured out.

LOL yup, with $250 you save by doing the work yourself you can buy yourself a nice bottle of Johnny Blue and a bottle of Don Julio.

I wanted to do the work myself but I needed the hitch installed ASAP and was just super busy with work.

Your taste of whiskey is impeccable. However, I prefer Herradura to Don Julio.

I am back home in a few weeks to attempt the u haul hitch install again.

I started on one side and carefully jacked up the hitch while using a pry bar to make sure the hitch cleared the bottom bumper bolt. Then I repeated this step on the other side. Once I did this, it fell into place. Make sure the hitch receiver is pointing down while doing this so the hitch doesn't hit the top two bumper bolts while jacking it up.
Jack and pry bar did the trick. Finished install in less than two hours.

Thanks for the tip

Do any of you guys with trailer wiring harnesses also have upgraded LED angel eyes? If so, have you noticed any electrical feedback noise through the speakers?

Also this bolt fishing tool makes easy work of putting the carriage bolts. I had some of these left over from my GTI hitch install when I installed the haul hitch.

Would totally agree this was more of a pain in the ass then saving 75 was worth.
I second the fishing wire tool in the link above. Makes it a piece of cake.

Does anyone with the Uhaul hitch have the wiring installed? If you do, would you mind sharing where you sourced the wiring kit?

Local shops seem scared to touch my car and their quoted price for wiring install support my hunch. I am looking to install wiring and need to know which wiring kit to source. Seems that Reese, Curt and a few other manufacturers have multiple versions of universal wiring.

Thanks.

Start reading from post #41

Whitbread has the westfalia hitch but his thread I recall talked a whole lot about the wiring as well. It had a brain I recall that communicates with the cluster if issues happen.

I have sourced this exact harness from etrailers based on your recommendation. Thanks.
