I have a stupid question. Why can't you just vent the blow-by under the car and plug the hole to the intake?

Cel most likely b/c there is a sensor..
I'm not too expertised but I assume the intake needs some of that air to maintain pressure

Yes there is a sensor, exactly.

Some of us see the need to keep crank case to turbo inlet connection for opposite reason. This would be To keep crank case below atmospheric pressure. Biggest concern on this front is not blowing oil seals by building up crank case pressure. TDI had done some crank case P measurements using a manometer and used dip stick tube as reference port. He showed that the crank case stays below atmospheric pressure and looked at measurements while driving too.

That's interesting. I suppose the main seals could benefit from that, but it would again be something BMW which I have never heard of about any other engine. I thought the sensor just made sure the hose went into the valve cover, or is it measuring vacuum at the valve cover? To me the most reasonable place for all that moisture and crap is not back into my engine.

Ditto. A lot of specifics before and after this post in that thread including manometer measurements. As boost and rpm increases the vacuum significantly increases...

Just did a 5,000 mile drain. Can was half full. Over the 5,000 miles it was daily driven 45 miles a day in moderate traffic (morning and after work rush hour) and highway cruising.

The catch can is capturing a good amount of blow by; there was also soot/sludge build up on the bottom of the can.

So far 12,000+ miles with the catch can and all is holding up well and working like it should.

Those of you that have gotten the catch can kit from me, I hope you're catching a good amount of oil.

135i, How many miles on the oil itself? I poured out about 1/2" from catch can from 1000 miles driving but didn't observe any buildup in bottom. My oil has 3000 miles on it. I have been doing 3000 to 3500 miles between changes.

That oil being poured has ~7,000 miles on it.

If you're not getting soot byproduct, guess that's good. Could be your driving style and/or fuel. The diesel fuel in NY is rated 40 Cetane. I only get from a BP station that's high flow.

Put more miles and only drain but not clean the can. See if you get some build up over time.

I've driven about 2700 miles since install.
installed 11/21/14, 35,2xx miles can empty (of course)
checked can 1/31/15, 36,2xx miles, had 1/2" collected, emptied and cleaned
checked can again, 4/11/15, 379xx miles, had 1/2" collected, empted and cleaned

So, I have collected a total of 1" over 2700 miles driven. There was an oil change in between 1st and 2nd check. There was no residue in bottom either time. A couple posters have commented about gook in bottom of can. Not the case here.

I have read that different oil brand have different volatility.

With my setup I'm collecting 5 ounces every 600 miles of mostly city driving. My accumulation on long trips/interstate driving seems to be approximately 75% of that. As I've stated before, the amount of oil collected in my opinion has to do with the design of the filtering device.

Can you please translate ounces to linear inches from bottom of cup? If i knew internal diameter of my can, i could convert to volume. I will go research my can.

Interesting. This would say a lot about the fuel quality..

Do try to go longer distance prior to cleaning the can, let's say ~5,000 miles. See if there are any signs of build up on the bottom.

I had actually expected more oil to have collected as it was almost double miles since last open and look event. I don't drive but about 6000 miles per year. I want to clean it out when i do an oil change so I will only go 3000 miles before open/clean out.

I can't find specs online. Can someone measure inside diameter please? 135i_vs do you have one in a box you could measure please? Not that big of a deal but sukutash reported in volume rather than in height of can. I'm not even sure if he's running a ADD W1 can.

Oil collection will be dependent on driving style, etc. I drive 12k a year. At your next drain, can pour it into a measuring cup to see quantity.
My observation is 1/4-1/2 qt every BMW recommended oil change mileage (10k-12k)
