Is it only for 335's? Or is this applicable to my 28?

Not entirely. This is structured by BMW as a safety recall, which to the NHTSA means very specific, concrete things. Anything caused by the failure of the safety recalled part (the bolt) is covered by the safety recall.

e.g., if your bolt grenaded your VANOS and somehow you put a cylinder head thru your top-end and hood, you get a new top-end and a new hood.

e.g., if your bolt grenaded your VANOS and locked your rear wheels and whatever happened, whatever is covered.

you may need a lawyer to make that second hypo happen, but it will happen.

Pretty sure it impacts the N52 as well as they seem to share VANOS units.

My SA advised that this is not an official recall yet, and that I will need to wait for the recall to be official before I can bring my car in for the work to be done.

My build date is 4/2010 and I have still not received the initial letter. I was also in the dealer getting my front suspension bushings replaced (out of warranty since 5/31/14) this week and they said no recalls were present. I know the recall might not be official yet, but is it possible that for some reason my car isn't affected?

I received my recall letter from BMW a couple weeks ago and called my local BMW dealer/service center last week; they said they don't have the parts (VANOS bolts) and didn't know when the parts would be available. I called the BMW customer service line today and they said they expect the parts notification letters to be sent towards end of July to early August, meaning that the parts are available at that time and the recall service can be scheduled.

I have not received the second letter yet.
The 4 hour thing? I doubt it. Almost every BMW time estimate I see is 2x reality.

Vanos Recall

First my dealer swore that my car was not part of the recall. A month later I get the letter confirming my dealer knows nothing. Now my dealer has no parts and no knowledge when he is getting parts. Has anyone had this done yet or are dealers all over the US keeping us on hold waiting for the parts? I'm planning a 3000 mile road trip in my BMW in 4 weeks, and would certainly like to have this completed before my trip.

Maybe BMW would like to supply me with a loaner for the trip

bmw really screwed up on these cars. They rushed these cars to the production line and really didnt think things through. THey tried to sell all these new models and turbo cars before other companies came out with their own new turbo cars.

ex. fuel pump, disgustingly weak water pump, thermostat, misfire, coils, brake dsc units and thats just a few. RIDICULOUS

I think im done with bmw !!!

I agree with evo. Sad really- because when you're in your element with these cars out there some days out on the open road, it's really a beautiful thing.

Didn't know that bolts are so hard to source within Germany. Maybe BMW should be looking for bolts in other countries.

I wish someone would come out with a bulletproof aftermarket water pump. I think they have the hpfp fixed for 2011 and newer...
Bolts... yeah, ridiculous. Save a penny or two per car and it adds up. I say bah to that philosophy... build them like they should be.
My thermostat housing cracked on Tuesday (giant pothole). I hope to get my car back by Wednesday. In a way, I'm grateful. Since my indie guy has to take out the tstat, I'm having him replace the water pump too, since I already bought one. I'm at 89k miles.

HPFP is not fixed. Its an internet myth.

HPFP is the same part they use the the N54. Its just a newer revision and less likely to fail.

I just called BMW NA because I was tired of waiting for the initial letter. The inexperienced customer service rep simply tole me that my 2011 335i build date 4/2010 is not affected at this time. I asked if my VANOS bolts sheared off would I still be covered? He said if that happened I could work through the proper channels at that time. If it ever does happen that sounds like it would be quite the process, 'proper channels' haha. I wonder how BMW determined which N55s were affected and which weren't.
