When I talked to my SA about having my ticking fixed six months ago, he said that BMW had already *tried* the lifter replacement as a hopeful fix but to no avail. He told me it would be very likely that mine would have the head replacement instead which is a sure fix. That was indeed the case. He told me this six months ago so I'm surprised they're still doing a lifter replacement these days...wonder if the SA's are not being updated? The SA told me that the lifter replacement approach was more labor intensive and invasive anyway. If any of you are recommended a lifter replacement instead of head replacement, enlighten them. Tell them it doesn't work!

I'll be sure to report back. I might take it in sooner if it does it again. Also, when I took it in the first time, the dealer replaced the lifters no quesitons asked. I'm sure they didn't even hear the tick since it doesn't do it often but they were obviously very aware of the issue.

i absolutely hate the new oil measuring system in the new bmw's.
its confusing and i found out its not as reliable as we may think.. id rather have it the old way, take out the oil stick and see for myself whats up... in my brothers 325 coupe it kept on saying different things, when checking it 3 or 4 times in a row..hated it because i was afraid to drive around with not enough oil, but even more dangerous i was afraid to fill it up while it didnt need no fill up..oilcarter carrying too much oil will ruin your engine |

But I am still hearing the dealer saying that a 2006 styled valvtronic system is normal for the ticking when it is not warmed up yet or when its a little low on oil?
ok change the oil 3000 mile is good for all engine, but international laws says, the 'environment system' less oil changes in the world equals less requirement for oil and more milage, they are working hard to reach this but its not good for the engine. |

After reading this thread again in detail, I am not sure if I have the same problem...
My e90 335i LCI only has the random ticking noise after I drive the car and shut down the engine. That's when the noise usually occurs, instead of when the car just being turned on during cold start. So, I do not hear the noise when the engine is running. Is this normal metallic sound? or do I have another problem? |

Coincidentally, a new metallic ticking noise is occuring on my 335. It does not seem to vary with engine speed and can only be heard at idle...this is the first time I actually heard it so I will see if it continues.

My friend's 2007 328i had bad ticking/tapping sound too @42,000 miles. We did an oil change yesterday with M1 0-40 oil . To my surprise, the sound went away and now its soo quiet and smooth. I think Ill change on my 335 too.

as for the ticking issue. BMW's current fix is still to replace the lifters-certain cars it will fix and others ive seen it not fix. some do end up needing a head replacement for whatever reason. |

I wonder if the 2010 N52s have the same issue. Surely this is something they'll fix before it comes time for a completely new engine in some upcoming year, right?

You'd think. N52 has been around since 2006.

ive got a 2010 335i.... with only 800 miles on it i have the ticking noise, on startup you hear it .. once it gets warmed up it goes away...
ITS NORMAL.... A very good friend of mine who only works on BMW's told me that MOST BMW have this noise... he had a E46 and a E39 in the shop when i went there and BOTH cars had the SAME exact noise.... did some research and its just a noise concern... nothing being harmed... He also told me the only downfall of this whole ticking is that if the timing chain tensioners ever go bad you wont be able to tell it the timing chain is making noise or if its the valves lol.... |

^^ I hope your friend is Correct, I was told the same thing by my Technician at my dealership, that as long as it goes away when warm and not low on oil when ticking it is just fine.
So I am going to wait and see what happens I have 2 years of cpo left on it.

Hmmm I'm wondering I should just hold off on this when I go in for my brake fluid flush. I've only heard the noise once or twice since I had the litters replaced. I do have new car warranty until June 28th and then 2 years of CPO after that.

The Midwest and Northeast have been having some very cold weather of late. The 'ticking' can occur on any brand car if it has been sitting outside overnight. My Dodge P/U ticks on a cold startup. After a warmup and a good 15-20 minute drive, put the car in Park, turn off the radio, get out of the car and listen. if you don't hear ticking, you don't have a problem. If you hear it............

My car ticked twice during the summer when it was 90+ outside. With my car it seems to be on cold starts after a short trip. The few times I've noticed it, it's when I'm leaving work which is 5 miles away, no highway.

I appologize for asking this here, But if I own a 2006 325xi What engine do I have, the N52? Or N54?
I tried searching honestly, but no luck and I keep getting told My 2006 thats 215bhp is supposed to tick when cold or low on oil by the dealer, and want to know if this is legit or BS? THANK YOU guys
