So the split screen has to be enabled to see the Album Art or it also displays in the full screen?

And for those of us without iDrive, can we implement iPod audio solely via the USB port?

I wonder if this will work on non 6FL option cars through the glovebox USB port? It seems by looking at the docs and install PDF from the 6FL Retro fit thread, that the USB in the armrest is shared with the glovebox port via a USB hub, so in theory this could be programmed without the 6FL option.

I would be willing to use my car's setup as the test rig, if anyone wants to assist with the steps of the german translation on the NCS Expert...

The 6FL USB adapter does not require iDrive to process audio, it has always processed iPod audio since introduction. The issue with the iPod cable and the 6FL has been playing DRM songs (it can't on purpose) and its non-standard tags used for songs in the HDD (they don't display the actual song name, only codes like F0D).

Otherwise, you can play the iPod thru the 6FL using the Apple cable. It sound better than using the OEM cable thru the AUX as well...

That's incorrect.

The glovebox USB is a input/output data port to the iDrive HDD without any player capabilities. It connects directly to the CIC and to no other module in the car.

The USB hub is shared with the 6NF if equipped.

I tried hooking up my Ipod and my 6fl wanted to browse it like a HD... I have late model '10. Guess I need to get a software update to enable this functionality?

Or... could you put album art in a directory and then have it displayed in Idrive that way? Someone w/ the working Ipod feature should try this with a USB HD to see if it works!

Just purchased an '07 328i w/ Nav, Bluetooth, Premium Pkg. It has the AUX jack, but not USB (I'm assuming this means that I do NOT have 6FL). I'm currently using the BMW y-adapter cable, in combo with a cig-lighter plug-in adapter that I can plug the USB part of the y-cable in for charging. This current setup let's me charge my iPhone, and play audio via the AUX audio source, BUT, I do not have the ability to change songs easily, only via the device itself. The cig-lighter adpater is kinda tall too, so when playing my iPhone I have to keep the arm rest up -- annoying!

So, my question is this, what is the best route to go to get fully integrated audio from my iPhone to the nav system, allowing for control of the iPhone from the steering wheel buttons, and keeping the ability to charge the device?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'll continue reading through the large number of pages, but if anyone is/was in a similar situation, and can shed some light, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks!

You have three options...

- OEM iPod adapter: dealer installed
- OEM USB/iPod adapter: not available in the USA but can be ordered in Europe
- mObridge iPod adapter: http://www.europeanautosource.com/pr...oducts_id=1651

Thanks Technic. I'll do some additional research to see what costs are for each option, and what the benefits/take aways are as well.

The album art is also visible in the full screen view.

One other advantage of the new set-up with the USB-to-dock cable: no error message at start-up about it not being a genuine Apple accessory

I have an 08' w/Nav but for some reason I can only search through my huge list of songs with no way to search via artists. My car originally didn't come with the IPOD adapter but as a part of the deal to buy the car the dealer agreed to install it. Unfortunately I bought it before testing and promptly installed a DCI and Vishnu piggyback. Now I think I have to take the car back to the dealer in order to get it fixed. Does anyone here know a way to fix it on my own? It would be great to not have to uninstall the mods!!

Here is what happens

Is this true for the 3G iphone as well? Any pros cons, cost estimates for the varying options? Theres SO MUCH conflicting info on this.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. No USB, No eject, but, iDrive and premium pkg
I've read where some have done a 6FL retro with junkyard parts. That seems like the BEST option

This does not appear to work with the iPod Touch, since the Touch does not support the USB disk mode. Is there a firmware update to allow 2010 versions of the 6FL to use the Apple USB cable as indicated for the 2011 model (per earlier post).

That does not sound right... the iPod Touch should be able to play thru the USB alone as well as the iPhone as both are fundamentally the same hardware but no cell phone.

The OEM document is very specific:

Applicable only to 3-Series Coupé / 3-Series Convertible (with option code 606 or 609) and 7-Series, 03/2010 and later for the European market.

What could happen is that a software update after 03/10 for all CIC will have those features present but disabled. As stated before, my MY2009 has a Bluetooth Audio selection in its list of variables, and when enabled it actually shows up in the screen but it does nothing when selected. That tells me that at least my CIC software (I don't know which version it is but it looks like it was the bugfix of 03/09) has the "handles" for Bluetooth Audio, although the actual functional feature showed up a year later.

I thought that as well, however I was unsuccessful at getting the iPod to be recognized. The Apple support site states clearly that the USB disk mode is not supported by the iPod Touch. It is the only iPod to my knowledge that does not support this mode.

Thanks for your comments concerning the CIC and the 2011 release. Let's hope that BMW releases this update for earlier 3ers.

There's nothing to turn on as the actual software is not there, only the variables.

Updated news on the iPhone 4 front. I'm cross posting this from another thread that I posted in:

Well, here's the good news. For grins, I plugged in the 6FL cable this morning to see what it would do with my iPhone 4.

I got this message (which is NOT the one I kept getting with my 3GS):

Upon clicking dismiss, I drove to an appointment, using the phone to play music, as 6FL was intended (well, partially, anyway).

When I got to the appointment, I used the phone for various things (unplugged), and when I got back into the car, the battery showed 96%, before plugging it back in.

I drove to work, and once I got there, the battery showed 100% again.

Now, I don't know what's different between the 3GS and the 4, but I'm definitely getting better results this time around (I dare say intended results, aside from the message on the screen).

I concur. My iPhone 4 charged and played as expected yesterday using the original 6FL adapter. My iPhone 3G would not charge- did play correctly. I have iDrive in 2008 335i

New 328 xDrive 6FL iPod Problems

I picked up a new 2010 328i xDrive this week and have experienced a series of deteriorating problems and wanted to see if others have experienced this. I've searched this thread and seemed to have seen others have some problems too but possibly not exactly like mine. Apologies if I missed something already discussed in the thread.

- Originally I had the 5G iPod just cut out and go to radio and them come back within a minute
-Also had the radio lock-up in AUX mode after dropping the iPod. Reset iPod and restarted car - everything was fine for a few days -with intermittent drops
-Yesterday, radio would only show AUX mode and won't even recognize iPod. iPod and direct use of AUX line both went dead. iPod also no longer goes to "OK to Disconnect" - i.e. doesn't seem to recognize the car anymore. While I temporarily lost the ability to play directly through the AUX line, that now seems to be restored, I'm now at least able to do that.

Tried my daughter's iPod Touch (OS 3.xx) and my iPhone (iOS4) and neither were recognized.

Is anyone else experiencing something like this? I'm going to dealer on Monday and will report back.

Thanks
