not just from a concussion, or broken neck type devastating injury standpoint. From a play 10yrs, never get hurt, and the simple repetitive contact is enough to cause brain damage.

I've not seen the research from soccer but would imagine that players who take lots of headers could be affected. Haven't seen anything about rugby purporting it a much smaller issue and much easier to stave off as it's much more easily seen as concussions...the play to play impacts are not violent enough for such rampant tissue damage to develop. That and all rugby players are alcoholics already, so the propensity for substance abuse is not a late-onset

its not even concussions....or direct head trauma. Any sort of rapid acceleration deceleration where the brain is jarred and the "yolk" and "whites" are moving within the egg shell causes the creation of the tau (sp?) proteins which cause the type of residual effects that lead to things like Duerson.

Hockey is a prime offender too.

So, the elimination of helmets is not a solution per se.

In your case Brian, I would be very concerned with your head banging into the headboard as often as it does, were I you.

100% agree that eliminating helmets isn't a total solution, but it is probably the most obvious and would help with that adage "safer equipment promotes dangerous behavior"

It will be interesting to see the "threshold" between the brain damage and different sports...logic (and science it seems) has clearly put football at the top as being the most violent and causing the most significant damage. And while other sports certainly do have the brain running into the skull, the collisions are either not as frequent (soccer, hockey, baseball) or not as violent (rugby, aussie rules).

Again purely speculating, based upon the fact that repetitive collision is a major contributor, and as it seems it doesn't have to be as violent as NFL hits (such as the 21yr college player who never saw the NFL and hung himself), logic tells me that rugby and aussie rules fb would be the next most dangerous, and soccer after that (Brian McBride had to have eye re-constructive surgery from taking headers, who knows what his brain will look like).

How such styles of play in sports other than football affects retired players physical and mental brain states should certainly be investigated, and perhaps they are overseas, where rugby and soccer are the major presence.

you know im gettin tired of all these pussies in the world. yea, research shows its bad to smash yourself into some else at a high rate of speed. thanks for the fucking info. is it also bad to stab yourself in the chest while wearing a chain mail vest? i mean your wearing a protective piece of gear sooooooo i dont know?!??!?!?! these are the same kind of people that are coming out with "eco friendly" cars (which is bullshit in itself). lets displace the pollution from the air to ground when we mine the fuck out of an area for the precious metals that go into batteries. u dont wanna harm yourself? cool, dont play any sports or do anything dangerous (including driving). stay in your protective bubble. you dont wanna harm the earth? kill yourself cause anything and everything we do as human "destroys" something else.
