That tuning box holds back fuel when at a constant speed, I saw an increased average on a run from 36mpg to 47mpg in our 120d auto, that was the 163bhp version. Around town it went from 34mpg to 38mpg.
Our 320d auto touring, which is 177bhp, is currently showing 46.3mpg, I would expect 54mpg to be easily achievable when I fit a Spider box.

600 miles to a tank is fairly easy now when on a run, so I bet 700 would be possible. I would also bet that if you drove round like a granny for the first few miles of filling up you could get the computer to read alot more than that.
Manuals even more so.

Tuning boxes make the on board computer over read. Are your figures from the computer or calculated manually?

Anyone got any pics of how they fitted theirs? I'm wondering how you all attached the box to the engine to make sure it doesn't move around.

what ever you do do NOT attach under the engine cover, this will cause vibration when the engine moves and make a knocking noise. What I did was from looking at the engine there is a brace type thing to the left and front and all I did was use 2 tie wraps to attach it (making sure any excess wire does not go near any moving parts)

p.s. I thought I had kept the tuning box quiet from wifey; was in pub tonight with irish friend who says ''how is that tuning thingy you got for the car'' dirty looks later and wife saying ''i thought your car seemed alot faster the other day when I drove it'' I had to tell the truth!

I would agree with that on most of them, but this one seems ok, my figures were calculated, and over 6000 miles as I was dubious as the gain was so high.

I know on VAG cars they are thrown out completely with tuning boxes.

Becuase the MPG is normally calculated by the injector pulse width (open time) for a given fuel pressure. The tuning box fools the ECU to run at a higher pressure but the ECU doesn't see the actual pressure. Running the same injector pulse width at a higher pressure will use more fuel.

Remapping normally ajusts the pulse width keeping the fuel pressure the same so the MPG calc is accurate.

I can't say 100% it's the case with this tuning box but on all the ones i have used before the MPG was 5-15% optimistic. Only way to check is to do a manual calculation.

Look at my post above.

As I said, I did the calculations, and when the average tank returns 500 miles instead of just under 400 miles you know it is doing roughly 20% more per fill up.
Remember this was on a 120d with a 50 litre tank.

Every tuning box I have tried before threw the mpg reading well out, but they were always on Audis, except tunit unit on an E46 320d which also threw out the obc.

Guys when will you get a tuned 320d down a drag strip?! would be good to compare stock with a boxed one!

I'd have no qualms about taking mine down the "strip" for comparison. The only problem is, why are they all so far away!! Organise a drag meet midlands or higher and I'll try and be there.

Gizze, sorry, didn't see the original post - thanks.

After owning the 335i (with the Xede) I really don't want to know my 0-60mph times!!

I have a racelogic AP22 timing meter that I may bung in the car and test it with and without a tuning box. I have not got round to ordering another one myself yet, when I do I will make the effort to time the car.

Gizze, drag strips record 1/4mile times not 0-60

How much is a racelogic thingy?

Haha, yeah, not sure why I said that, 12.9 seconds to 60mph in the 335i would not have been that impressive!!

I think they are around £150, I bought mine used for £100, sure there are better ones out there now though, this hooks up to the PC via serial and the new breed hook up usb. You don't need to hook it up to the PC to get the results.

I got 556 miles to a full tank of fuel..(with various traffic conditions and road types)..which works out at about 41.5mpg which is an improvement from approximatley 450 miles without the box for a full tank tank (33.5mpg).
