Should we start a INDEPENDENCE II support group?

I was able to plug my VIN number into the tracking section of the shipping company site today, and it is showing my car was loaded:

Vessel: INDEPENDENCE II
Port of origin: BREMERHAVEN

Voyage: EB837-INC
Port of Destination: NEW YORK, NY
Port Arrival ETA: 9/22/08

I'm now entering a new phase of neurotic tracking and waiting.

Anyone else care to join me?

Production Complete

I called the 800 number this morning and the nice computer lady said, "Vehicle production complete, awaiting transport!"
Hopefully there's a ship waiting at the dock for my car to get on!

I used the following site:

www.2wglobal.com

Go to Customer tools and select cargo tracking. Use Ro Ro cargo and type in your vin.

I've been trying for a few days, and today was the first day the VIN came back with any info. My car was completed 9/3/08.

Good luck!

you guys are on the fast track!

So, There's already two ships that have left for the East, but maybe not even 1 for the west. My e93 was done on 9/3 and made it to the port on 9/6 where it still waits for a boat

My car is being "transported to the port of exit." Woo hoo! I think we'll be on the same boat.

For what it's worth, my vent for the day: I don't think this nutty online Owners Circle has any predictability or data integrity in terms of tracking build/delivery, nor does the 800#. Two specific examples... My E93 was built and I believe completed production last week as scheduled. Interestingly by the 800# it sat in the "paint shop" for more than 2, perhaps 3 days last week depending on how you count things, and went immediately to the infamous "vehicle production complete waiting to be released to the carrier" status last Friday morning (I actually think mfg completed Thursday 9/4). I get there may be a day delay in how that system reports status, but more than 2 days in the paint shop ...especially when BMW has fully automated plant floor systems? I confirmed production was complete with a real rep on the phone via the 800#. Later last Friday, my CA indicated from his system the E93 was in final production from his view. Anyway, as of this morning - 5 days later, the 800# has my E93 in the same "waiting release" status which would imply it is still sitting at the plant. I can't believe that's true if the plant is pumping out nearly 900 cars/day. Where would they put them all, and especially with the economic problems, wouldn't BMW want to get them moving to get cash in their hands quicker since they will stack up again at the port awaiting a ship? At this rate, assuming my E93 isn't stuck in a corner of the lot somewhere and they don't use a LIFO (IT guys, you know what I mean?) approach for sending new vehicles to the port, there would be 2000-3000 vehicles sitting there with mine, and the number goes up by one every minute, likely 2 shifts per day. To complicate things, the online Owners Circle still says I'm in production, so it's pretty worthless too. Others have seen different kinds of progress and even confirmed VINs manufactured the same week are on a ship to the States already via the non-BMW shipping inquiry systems.

Thanks for listening. ...and yes, as has been mentioned, many of us in the IT world would probably have been fired or be having some serious discussions with our people if we had systems and/or processes like this. I can understand some lag time especially on internal management reporting systems, but for it to be THIS out of whack across multiple consumer-oriented systems is pretty scary if I were their CIO or even the Marketing department. My clients or sales partners would never find that acceptable in the international services company I work for. I guess I don't either as the consumer in this case, but hey, what's one to do but wait, wonder, and complain every now and then until my new toy arrives some day, at which time I'll hopefully be so happy I'll forget all about these times? (Except for you-all of course!)

I couldn't agree with you more. It's very frustrating. FYI, for those that are wondering, LIFO = Last In First Out

I couldn't agree more. I've been obsessively checking both on-line and through the 800 number and there's definitely some whacky tobaccy going on. The online OC keeps cycling between displaying no options and wrong options. Fortunately, for me, the 800 number gives me hope that things are still proceeding. For what it's worth, my car is now in the same category as yours - released to carrier. I know this is the mother of all small sample sizes, but maybe they just need to have enough cars bound for CA before releasing it to the ship.

Even within the IT world, there are differing levels of system criticality, and I suspect most of us work on systems which are considered somewhat more important than one that provides a very small percentage of the customer base up-to-the-minute status on vehicle production/transport/preparation. Doubtless the vast majority of BMWs purchased in the U.S. are obtained from dealer inventory, and thus it is something of a concession to the special-order/enthusiast market that a system like OC exists at all.

That said, if they are providing the service at all, they should make an effort at doing so at a bit higher level than is the case currently.

Yup, completely agree. ...especially when it is a site providing a service to a new, paying, customer for something that is far from a commodity item. It would almost be better to have a black hole like all the other manufacturers do than provide a service (make that 3 different ones) that cause more angst than benefit for the users that do try to make use of them. (Guess I've been trying to balance P&L with customer satisfaction / loyalty stuff too many years in my real job.)

I ordered mine June 17th, one of my dealer's first two allocations for the 2009 production.

I know there is some frustration with the slow updates that we are getting. Personally, I am pretty happy with the ability to track progress through production and now transport. My last car was also a special order (Infiniti G35), and it took forever. I couldn’t get any details from the dealer, online, etc. It made it that feel that much longer. At least this time, I feel like I have a pretty good idea where my car is.

Hang in there everyone! We can do it!
