It's the most misunderstood strategy in the market.

I had intended to buy my x5 at lease end, until I got hit by a drunk driver. Caused over 20k in damage, and I couldn't file for diminished value, since bmw was technically the owner. Luckily bmw let me out of the lease easily.

OK dude, if you want to act like a tool enjoy your $5,000 3 series and sound financial advice.
Lol what does my car's value have anything to do with it?

And you wonder why I don't believe you.

I saw this happen so many times when I was in the insurance industry, and it put some people in a pretty bad spot. They ended up owing money on a vehicle that was totaled and headed to the scrap yard.

You’re not going to change anyone’s mind here. Leasing works for some and owning works for some. It’s a personal choice. I lease. I enjoy having a new car every 3 years . I will not have a car out of warranty these days with all the tech and electronics. I do low miles and treat the car as if I own it. Damn, I put super in loaners when I have to fuel up. Anyone who gets my CPO is lucky. My vehicles are meticulously maintained. I enjoy my cars and drive them hard but don’t abuse. I can easily afford to purchase but leasing works for me.

This is just one of those topics that fall into a religious type debate.

For me, there's something to be said about not having a car payment. I was car payment free for 3 years until this year when I picked up my 2016 C650 Sport used. I usually pay off a vehicle in one year maybe two. With the C650, I'll probably take it to full term or close to it as my monthly payment is $130 and the interest on the loan is 1.9%.

LOL. Naw. It's a BMW maxi scooter. Scooter with a 650cc parallel twin engine that will do 110 MPH according to BMW. I've had it up to ahem...90 on a number of occasions without issue. Wish I had two of these.

I just look it up! It looks sweet!

In all honesty, I've never heard of anyone financing a scooter before, but for 1.9% I'd do it too. That's free money!

That scooter has more comfort/tech than both of my superbikes. It has ABS, traction control, heated hand grips, heated seats (rider and passenger individually adjustable), an accessory outlet where I can charge my cell phone in a lockable glove box, and tons of storage.

You can tell BMW Motorrad put a decent amount of design effort into this scooter. As I get more comfortable with it, I find myself leaning that sucker more and more. I've scraped the ground clearance feeler for the center stand twice (both on the left and right sides). The inverted front forks and the adjustable rear shock gives clear hints this is not your normal scooter. The GT version which is the only one BMW sells now has the added features of blind spot monitoring, electrically adjustable windscreen, full running boards, and back rest for the rider. I prefer the Sport version as it's 25 lbs lighter.

And the reason it's not out of line to finance these scooters is because they retail for around $12k new. Of course I didn't pay that much for mine used. But it's still definitely significantly more expensive than going in and buying a new Vespa.

LOL. Yes. After owning it for a few months, it's still odd for me to call it a scooter. The thing is actually a bit bigger than both of my superbikes. Everyone that has seen it think it's a motorcycle. On a group one earlier this year, I was railing that thing pinned to the back side of the lead rider on a 1400cc sport tourer. He was shocked I was glued to him the entire time.

No. It's why ever since beginning in 2007 with the N54 that CPO vehicles have been plagued with engine and transmission issues. Initial owners tuning the shit out of their cars and leaving second/third owners to deal with the fallout.

I also blame BMW for not being more diligent.

As for the lease/purchase, new/used, yes some are better financial decisions than others. On the other hand if we were truly interested in the best financial decision we would never buy/lease a new/used BMW, after that you are weighing what you want compared to what it costs. I only buy used but I also occasionally go to expensive restaurants, expensive trips, etc. and none of these make the list of "best financial decision".

My favorite is the people that talk about buying used BMW's because this is the best financial decision (there are far better choices if trying to maximize savings).
^Amen this, we’d all be in used Corollas or Civics and driving them until the bodies rust off if we were making the “best financial decision.”

Obviously a lot of us don’t want to do that.

This topic has turned to counting someone else's money. Do your math and get whatever you're comfortable with. All I know is, I always smile, whenever I jump into my BMW. Like it has been said here, was it best financial decision? Probably not, I could've saved some extra $$, but I don't care.
