Gloss is my preference. The matte ones i have seen in person looked like they were weathered by the sun and not intentionally made matte.

Does anyone make a grill with chrome kidneys and gloss black slats?

Honestly i love this thread. Most of it the reaction of people from people with mat grills approving gloss. When i first got my bmw i came to this site and my "first mod" was going to get a new grill. I was a little confused at first why all of you are swapping out a the sexy stock grills for the cheap looking plastic grills. I knew i wanted gloss, but i couldn't find it, i herd of the one from tischler but thats 100$ and quite pricey for a grill. I ended up deciding on making my grill like the lci (outer gloss, inner stock). But its great to see how some people bias to matt black change the opinion. Now if they would make some nice gloss black rims for the e92 i would be all over them.

there are a lot of black rims out there.
If you get Gloss Black, you will find that some are just the factory silver ones painted black. This doesnt sound like a big deal but if they werent prepped correctly before painting they will chip, blister and flake. The metal finish is not very receptive to paint. It doesnt stick to it very well. (had it happen wirth my first set) At first not such a big deal, little touch up spot here or there, but when it starts to blister and flake you are looking at areas the size of a penny or nickel.

After checking out a few threads like this one I'm going to go carbon fiber for grill and front splitters. I recon they will look hot as is. Adding a pic I found for comparison to gloss v's matte:

I just want to throw this out there because it may help someone choose between matte and gloss black kidney's. So, I have a pre-lci e90 and decided to get the BMW Performance Gloss Black Grilles (because I thought the gloss black grilles looked the best).
The first set I bought and installed I noticed were all scratched up and had one of the clips broken. So, I returned them to my local dealership. They had been bought and returned by someone else before me. The next set of BMW Performance Gloss Kidney's I got looked great except for the trim pieces on the hood. I noticed that when the car was in the sunlight there were two yellow colored spots on both of the gloss black trim pieces. See the picture below. I just couldn't handle looking at my gloss black grilles and seeing those two yellow spots. The spots looked like the shine you get off a spilled puddle of oil. I will also note that I looked at 4 other sets of trim pieces at my local dealership and they all seemed to do the same thing when looked at out in the sun. The fact that it's almost always sunny where I live in San Diego also weighed heavily into my decision to return the grilles and the trim pieces. Note: the grilles did NOT have the same problem as the trim pieces, although it could have been because they were not directly angled towards the sun (Really wish the pre-lci e90's didn't have those ugly trim pieces). Conclusin: I returned the BMW Performance grilles and ordered the Jlevisw matte black grilles. Haven't recieved them yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing nothing but flat black!
