I am sure someone on this forum has access to SIB. I will not believe till I see the SIB.

It's real. My SA told me last week that their service manager and service foreman were spending a week at BMW to get trained on it all and that they were starting on mine. I remember him saying that the intake was put into a cleaner machine for like 40 hours with some extra chemicals added and that they were going to be leaning the rest out somehow...waiting on parts to do it, something about a tool for the ports. He wasn't totally up to speed but told me he would be able to explain it to me more when they got back to the dealer. I do't have any notion on costs...I hope very little fr me as I am their guinea pig

I am eagerly awaiting the SIB as well. My car only has 26,000 miles but has thrown the SES three times already. It is at the dealership right now. All emissions related - first it was the EGR valve, then NOx sensor, and now something else SCR related. Hopefully we'll know the SIB while my dealer still has my car ...

My D recently had the works done to it... new manifold, heads removed and cleaned, etc. (A month in the shop) The first SES light came on about 100 miles after I got it back.
I made an appointment but later cancelled it since it was only on for a short time. The second one came at about 300 miles but also was of short duration. The last one came on about 700 miles and has not gone away... another visit is scheduled for next week. I'm now slightly over 1000 miles since the service. I scheduled for a loaner and it takes a while to get one. I don't know what the next step is since the engine is now pretty carbon free. To my knowledge the same engine in the X5 has much fewer problems... since there is a difference in emissions requirements between the 2 vehicles then I'm pretty sure there is an emissions solution to it. I see the possibility of a class action coming if BMW doesn't find a real fix to this soon... it affects too many customers. BTW, have you noticed how the problem is affecting the resale value of your ride? Chuck |

Is there a easy way of telling whether your 335d has carbon/soot buildup or not? I just bought a 2011 335d as CPO from a BMW dealer with 47000 miles on the odometer. I do not have a comparison on the driving feeling, throttle response, feel of power, etc. when the car was new... how it drives NOW is my benchmark.
Are there any easy-to-remove mechanical parts from where you can check whether it has carbon/soot buildup? I want to get my car checked and not wait until the SES light comes on during a weekend trip in the Mojave desert. Another question / observation I found when I perform the adaptive driver memory reset (as described nicely elsewhere in this forum): I get in the car, plug the key into the keyhole and press the start/stop button (foot OFF the break so that the motor stays off) to bring all the "idiot" lights on. All the lights turn OFF after a few seconds except the SES light which stays ON. The SES light however never stays on when I start the car normally (i.e. foot on break to start the motor). Do you also observe the same effect on your cars? Or do I trigger here some diagnostic function on the car which tells me about some engine parameters that require servicing? |

FWIW, the emissions requirements are no different. They both fall into the same emissions category |

BTW it is owner cost. What I suggested was to give us an extended warranty to 100k like they did to the M3 a few years ago

Doubt it. Most will wait patiently until you start throwing codes before doing anything. Preventative maintenance I don't believe is part of the BMW ownership experience. It's about getting into a payment plan until your contract is up, and then into another.

How do you push them to address an inspection? I feel that my mpg is down. I can't prove anything. But I'm guessing it's carbon buildup. ?

Same problem here... I bought the car as a CPO with 45,000 miles and I don' get over 24 MPG (about 80% short distance city driving though). I'd be really interested how other 335d's drive when the do NOT have carbon builtup. I only know how my car drives, that's my benchmark. How about meeting up for a beer sometimes to discuss about about our carbon buildup, tuning, etc. among other 335d drivers? Who else is from Orange County?
