Thank goodness. I'm thinking of buying either a jb3 or cobb after reading this thread. I hadn't envisioned the access port dangling over my feet all the time. Part of me just wants to live dangerously ;-)

Probably true. Though my 'what would we debate' was mostly rhetorical.
Even without the tuning experience, I agree that flashes will most likely become the dominant tune. Once you add ATR, it creates an ecosystem to feed on itself. More and more flash competition will come along. (I'd actually been checking back occasionally for shark injector and caught the announcement for Cobb -- amazed that it came to fruition so fast). Piggybacks have some theoretical advantage for invisibility, but I think it is only theoretical. P.s. Thanks for driving this timing/tuning point. The million repetitive posts waste time, but I think the audience needs it. In my opinion, the deflection of the approach and theory is more of an issue than the approach itself. A lower cost sophisticated boost controller is a nice product. A full tune, it isn't, IMO. These threads helped me get past my tune nervousness. I don't like the idea of inaccurate engine processes, or even the DME living in a virtual reality.... Quote:

1) plug it into OBDII port 2) flash 3) after it's flashed, remove Cobb from OBDII **unless you want to read "real time" parameters such as boost, a/f, etc Last edited by Litos; 02-25-2011 at 09:10 AM.. |

I purchased a universal cell phone holder from verizon for 20 bucks. It has a suction cup or clips into the air vents. Right now it is clipped into the center drivers side air vent. In the picture above it was suctioned to the windshield.

I am going to use one of the phone holders. I am very impressed with the numbers they put down on a stock car. I wonder what they can do with a FBO car.

I have a full bolt on car, when stage 2 comes out, I will dyno stock, stage 1, stage 2 all withing 10 min of each other. If i had to guess I am somehwere around 360-370 to the wheels right now on a basic stage 1. On my stage one that slight more aggressive with boost then the OTS release, Id venture to guess 370-380.

doesnt PLX and other companies make something similar as a gauge that can read OBDII properties and display as you pick on a guage?

I was considering getting the Kiwi PLX device, the problem is once either JB4/Procede hijack the CANbus, it's rendered useless.

Sorry, don't have any experience playing with plx guages. Either way does gueages wont work on anything but flashed cars and the piggys don't report accurate signals.

Yep - there are a few that are compatible with the PIDs the OBDII on the bmw puts out. The only issue is that with all the tunes that have CAN integratoin (piggys) they OBDII style gauges won't be able to connect as the piggyback is taking priority.

I think the problem at this point on the subject of timing control is entirely with Terry/Mike. They have themselves deep into this position that the DME can and does handle all timing related issues and enough logic built-in to the system, that is doesn't need external/altered timing to run higher boost safely. "As proven by the millions of miles and most tunes sold of any vendor on planet Earth."
Once you have yourself so deep on a position, you can't go back without completely losing all credibility. Right now, the don't seem to have any credibility with anybody who knows anything about FI tuning fundamentals, and the N54 is no different in regards to these principles. But, I would like to pose the question to Mike/Terry. Why does every tuner out there who performs flashing, piggyback, or custom tuning of the N54, want to control timing directly? That is their position based on their experience. Controlling timing is fundamental as part of FI. Yet, Terry/Mike are the only ones that think it isn't necessary and the stock DME is more than sufficient to do it on the N54? Do you guys have more insight and knowledge about the N54, DME and FI that is so far above and beyond the cumulative decades of FI experiences of other tuners?
